WASHINGTON, Oct. 24, 2005 – A combination of rockets and car bombs exploded near the outer walls of the Palestine and Sheraton hotels in downtown Baghdad today, military officials reported. A statement from Multinational Force Iraq said civilian casualties have yet to be determined, but that no coalition forces were injured in the attack. Iraqi security forces and coalition forces are securing the area and bringing order to the bombing site, the statement said.

Reportedly, a number of Western journalists stay at the Palestine Hotel.

In other Iraq news, Iraqi army troops detained two men and their stash of ordnance and cash Oct. 23 in western Fallujah. Soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, 4th Brigade, 1st Iraqi Intervention Force, nabbed the two military-aged males and seized contraband that included 19 rounds of assorted loose ammunition, three spools of fishing wire, a fuse switch, blasting caps, black powder, lead ammunition components and 183,000 Iraqi dinar in currency.

The same day, soldiers from 4th Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment (172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team), seized a large weapons cache during a search in the Rawah area, near the Euphrates River. The cache included more than 1,000 antitank mines and several timed mines. The weapons were destroyed on the scene.

In other developments, a 73-year-old security detainee died Oct. 23 of natural causes at Camp Bucca, military officials reported. Officials said his body will be transferred to the family upon completion of an autopsy, in accordance with standard procedure.

Elsewhere, the Iraqi army's infantry school at Kirkush Military Training Base held a graduation for 425 soldiers from their basic infantry school today.

Soldiers from throughout Iraq attend the seven-week school after being selected for the infantry branch after basic training. Training covers basic and advanced infantry techniques as well as other essential military skills.

Biting the hand that feeds them, just like in Saudi Arabia.

Supposedly they blew up a concrete barrier with one car bomb and another car bomber drove through the gap, which brings up the ancient Slobovian saying: you can't blow up a ditch.

Another sign of the desperation of the insurgents in Iraq. First it was attack the Sunnis, now its attack the press. You got to be hurting when you attack your allies.AWB

notice the shopping cart of items to build a bomb. The other day they found a detailed storage area of explosives. It was almost like they are ordering A B & C items and having them delivered. Its not the mines, rockets or shells. The other items they are finding is what is interesting.
