The ability of Humans to produce enough CO2 to significantly alter our planets climate is based on junk science.

Earths global warming is due to solar activity, similar warming is happening on Mars where we humans have no influence.

The true "sustainable development" would already be happening - if these idiots hadn't implemented their Gestapo-like zoning and housing requirements.

Houses must face the street, even if orienting the house towards the sun would actually make more sense in terms of free lighting and some solar gain.

You must have an approved septic system or hookup to city sewage, even though a properly-dug pit latrine, or composting setup, would result in less actual waste occurring. Sewage treatment plants require HUGE amounts of clean water.

Etc. etc.

Philip Sellwood, Chief Executive of the Energy Saving Trust, said "The bleak picture of life in 2020 can be easily avoided just by taking small measures now to reduce excess levels of carbon emissions - one of the leading contributors to climate change.

Even the IPCC panel admits that any effect full Kyoto might have on climate change would be miniscule. This is about controlling who gets the returns on those invested "carbon credits."

Just another pied piper leading the lemmings off the cliff.

So utterly fatuous and laughable, that it makes no sense to address any of the points of the argument. All that's left is to ponder the mental state of people who write this nonsense.

So now we see the why about the dude that wrote "1984" -- he was a Brit, and just a bit ahead of his time.

This spartan future life will of course not extend to government officials nor to entertainment and media elites. Of course not!

Will Third World countries be capped at this level of development, or will these terms only apply to the white middle class?

DING DING, you're the winner!

Most popular science writing these days is far more about the state of mind of the author than the state of nature and science.

I remember a fictional story in The Weekly Reader about a severe energy crisis changing everything in the future -- when I was in elementary school in the mid-1970s.

The Energy Saving Trust is an environazi NGO funded by a) the Government and b) the private sector after the Rio earth summit. It's not actually part of the UK government as many on this thread seem to believe, but it is galling that some tree-hugging twats are living off my taxes and writing this bilge. This seems to be the only way to contact them

LOL! These recommendations read like a watermelon's wet dream.

They come close to tipping their hand, though. The real goal of environmentalism is to bring about the kind of restrictions they outline, rather than vice versa. What they hate is modern society and its creature comforts; a feigned concern for the environment is simply an excuse to get rid of them.

But why should the watermelons hate patio heaters, long baths, and electric toothbrushes? What need have the Godless for asceticism? I'll hazard a guess: they believe that the reason some people have these things while most others do not is because most others want them but can't afford them. That's unfair, they believe. Since they haven't been able to reduce everybody to the same economic level through wealth redistribution, they dream of levelling everyone to the same standard of living through some other sort of coercion.

Energy policy is just a convenient vehicle by which to punish the comfortable. If someone solved the energy problem tomorrow, another would quickly be found.

What I wrote to the gits at the EST, with a hat-tip to TChris for his great links.

I have just read the recent report from the trust about "Households in 2020" as cited at www.oilfiredup.com/news/index.asp?id=430

It is based upon an incorrect - and possibly fraudulent - premise. You should be aware that there is no, repeat NO evidence of significant anthrogenic global warming.

See for instance McIntyre's analysis of the "hockey stick graph" developed by Mann et al. [1998, 1999], which was relied upon by the IPCC to claim that the 1990s were the warmest decade of the millennium. This can be found at www.climate2003.com/

See also Dr Singer's refutation at www.pbs.org/wgbh/warming/debate/singer.html, the NCPA's refutation at http://www.ncpa.org/pub/ba/ba478/ or the Marshall Institute's analysis of the non-correlation between CO2 levels and warming. This can be found at: www.marshall.org/article.php?id=13

I look forward to your reply.

IIRC, they use wool insulation in NZ, Canada & Ireland and in Greenland, after introducing sheep to the natives, they were burning the wool (phew!) for heat, because there were so few markets for it. A craftswoman was paid by the Danish government to teach the natives how to make felted reindeer and igloos w/Eskimos as a tourist souvenir.
http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Metro/3075/english/uk-billeder03.html

http://www.feltmaking.dk/english/article01.php

The problem w/the insulation is figuring out how to keep it from absorbing moisture. Wool can hold 30x its weight in water before feeling wet. As for burning it: it stinks like burning hair.

Google:

The article mentions roof gardens. Our local greens tried this on the rooftop of their alternative HS. Turned out the weight of the soil and containers exceeded the carrying capacity of the roof.
