I took the chance and read the article...their spin is that the chief of Italy's military intelligence service shopped what he may have known were false documents. Hadley (then Deputy National Security Adviser) took them seriously and eventually the uranium statement made its way to the SOTU address. They also claim that Fitzgerald received an unpublished report from the Italian government's investigation of the forgeries. (So says NATO sources.)

So let's just say it's all true...why would Fitzgerald be interested in the forgeries? Does his jurisdiction include evaluating intelligence on which a war may or may not have been based? Or is it more likely that he is looking at forgeries that Wilson seemed to know about in advance?
