Miers Withdraws Supreme Court Nomination

WASHINGTON - Harriet Miers withdrew her nomination to be a Supreme Court justice Thursday in the face of stiff opposition and mounting criticism about her qualifications.

Bush said he reluctantly accepted her decision to withdraw, after weeks of insisting that he did not want her to step down. He blamed her withdrawal on calls in the Senate for the release of internal White House documents that the administration has insisted were protected by executive privilege.

"It is clear that senators would not be satisfied until they gained access to internal documents concerning advice provided during her tenure at the White House — disclosures that would undermine a president's ability to receive candid counsel," Bush said. "Harriet Miers' decision demonstrates her deep respect for this essential aspect of the constitutional separation of powers — and confirms my deep respect and admiration for her."

Hopefully now we can get a conservative, not just a republican.

The anti-Miers conservatives have just destroyed a strong, viable legacy for GWB. It has been absurd to the point of comedy. Now, let them see if they can get a pro-lifer on the bench, which will never be allowed to happen and then let's see if it by chance it did happen, one vote would reverse it.

The way out is a facade so thin that it is shameful.

Like what? Any candidate that doesn't get Borked by the extreme left will get Borked by the extreme right.

The thing I learned from this is to not expect better reporting based on facts from the National Review than from the New York Times.

Maybe she wasn't a solid candidate, but what I saw was serious Borking based on cherry picking details rather than looking for the truth.

Gonzales? You mean he wants to go through this whole thing again?

I agree. I wouldn't break out the champagne just yet. I am dreading an intellectually elite nominee with a distinguished career piece who goes on to write brilliant opinions ... supporting the liberal view. Another Justice O'Connor? I guess that would be better than another Justice Souter, but I sure hope those aren't the choices.

God bless you President Bush. It takes a big man to admit when he's wrong.

Now give us someone we can all agree on.

"Yep, he's learned that conservatives will turn on him like a pack of dogs just as fast as liberals will."

Unless he stabs us in the back first, huh ;-) Like with Miers?

Spiting the conservative critics would not be a smart move on W's part. He would be better served by nominating a known conservative - one who was passed on by the gang of 14 as acceptable - to gain back conservative loyalty. If he becomes vindictive, he will be abandoned.

There's a difference between pushing a little old lady into the path of a speeding bus and pushing a little old lady out of the path of a speeding bus.

Turning on someone for doing wrong is not morally equivalent to turning on someone for doing right.

Chuckie Schumer just wet his pants. Dirty little secret is that the libs in the senate really can't stomach the fight that's coming. W has a good track record, when all is said and done, and they know it.

I just read Miers letter to POTUS and thought the exact same thing: Krauthammer nailed it. The funny thing is when I first read Mr. Krauthammer's article I thought, that's a great idea. Too bad they can't use it now that it's been written about. Guess I was wrong. Oh well, at least we don't have to suffer through the ugly spectacle that would have been her confirmation hearings.

"If this doesn't cause a rupture on the right side that will set the table for the left wing Rhinos to jump ship, I don't know what will."

Count on it. Some people are willing to throw the war in order to win every small battle. One has to wonder what really motivates them.

Don't be so excited. Get ready for Gonzalez.

Wouldn't that just be a spite pick? He knows how we would take that. More headaches he doesn't want. My bet is he picks someone we like just to get it over with.

Here's my take. I was initially suspect of Roberts but so far I really like him. I don't think it's gonna be JRB, but I don't think it will be Gonzales either. It will be either a Priscilla Owen type, or another, female, lesser known judge somewhat more conservative than O'Connor.

"Can you say Hi to Majority leader Reid"

That logic isn't going to cut it anymore. Same with "vote for my RINO, or Hitlery becomes President." So what? What's the difference?

I'm afraid you are correct. This was President Bush's attempt to reach out to the conservatives more; he was snubbed. I would not be surprised to see a nominee we like even less. I dearly hope I am wrong.
