NEWARK, Del. -- In Delaware, Newark High School principal Emmanuel Caulk says he didn't know in advance that an assembly Tuesday that featured two pro-football players would include a Christian message.
In a letter that was sent home to parents yesterday, Caulk says the literature he saw before the assembly didn't say that the presentation was non-secular.
And Caulk is apologizing to students and parents.
Philadelphia Eagles players Tra Thomas and Thomas Tapeh spoke for about 45 minutes.
Tra Thomas is the founder of Athletes United for Christ. Caulk says the school did not know about his affiliation. The group's Web site says Thomas is touring schools to promote a rally and concert for high school students next week at the Living Faith Christian Center in Pennsauken, New Jersey.

Great. A whole school instantly full of Scripture-murmuring zombies. Those poor parents. Their children TORN from them at the height of youth.

Is it still okay to have an FCA at public schools? Is a faculty member allowed to be sponsor?

Let's see. Suppose it had been one of the several Muslims who play ball. Suppose he had given a talk about Islam at an assembly where students were required to attend. How would you feel about that?
We do not teach religion in our schools, for a very simple reason.

I'm Jewish. I have no problem with individuals expressing their Christian faith in public schools so long as it's clear as it apparently was here that it was just that - - their own opinion.
So long as kids aren't given to understand that this is the official position of the school, there is no violation of the Establishment Clause.
To: Malacoda
I think more than an apology is in order.
Those children are scared for life.

I wish the article would mention what it is that was said. 'Christian Message' is pretty vague.

It really is a shame that these guys made such overtly Christian comments in Newark, DE - a town which has more heroin addicts per capita than any other community in the US.
We wouldn't want any Christianity disturbing the blissful community of Newark.

There would have been no apology because having Muslims talk
about their religion would be part of the "diversity program" of the school.

Kudos to Tre and Thomas. Two class acts.
Lots of solid Christian MEN on the Eagles, including Jeremiah Trotter and Brian Dawkins. It's one of the main reasons the team has been so solid and together for so long--despite the TO situation.
