Reid on Miers Withdrawal Thursday, October 27, 2005
Washington, D.C. – Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid released the following statement on Harriet Miers’ withdrawal of her nomination to the United States Supreme Court.
“The radical right wing of the Republican Party killed the Harriet Miers nomination. Apparently, Ms. Miers did not satisfy those who want to pack the Supreme Court with rigid ideologues.
“I had recommended that the President consider nominating Ms. Miers because I was impressed with her record of achievement as the managing partner of a major Texas law firm and the first woman president of the Texas Bar Association. In those roles she was a strong supporter of law firm diversity policies and a leader in promoting legal services for the poor. But these credentials are not good enough for the right wing: they want a nominee with a proven record of supporting their skewed goals.
“In choosing a replacement for Ms. Miers, President Bush should not reward the bad behavior of his right wing base. He should reject the demands of a few extremists and choose a justice who will protect the constitutional rights of all Americans.”

Huh?!? Naaaaaah, that's a typo. It should be:
"He should reject the demands of those who believe in the Constitution and listen to me and a few other extremists and choose a justice who will invent new constitutional rights for some Americans."There, fixed it for ya Harry. Much better now.

I'm convinced now, that this was a set-up all along, to embarrass President Bush.
Poor Dirty Harry is sad! Him and the Gang of 14 don't get to pick the nominee anymore...
The nomination to the US Supreme Court is of far greater importance than some short term political squabble. It is about the philosophical make-up o fthe Court for the next 50 years, and whether we continue to get more Roe and Lawrence type decisions.
The fatal blow to her candidacy was the release of her 1993 speech. Read the pertinent excerpts. It is clear that her worldview is not in the mold of Scalia or Thomas; rather she has the Anthony Kennedy "autonomous self" point of view.
We were kidding ourselves and hoping that she was the type of Supreme Court Justice that Bush promised us in the campaign , which formed the basis for why we voted for him.
Don't worry about the Dems short term whining. If he now appoints a Scalia/Thomas-like justice as promised, this is a long term good thing.
Besides, Miers looked too much like the two comediennes on SNL.

I fail to see a screw up thus far.
Reid has to hold his pro-fillibuster coalition together. It wont be easy.
You're right. We should just do whatever the Democrats say. If we don't do what they say, we are playing into their hands.
Reed is telegraphing the fear of the Left: that Bush will now nominate a solid, proven conservative, and the greatly touted and cherished "division in the GOP" will suddenly evaporate.
BRING IT ON!
So give yourselves all a pat on the back, secure in the knowledge that by electing George Bush, we have given the Democrats a bat to beat over the head of the next nominee. Since the Democrats liked John McCain better, we should have elected him, right?

I hope you are incorrect.
A lot of so called conservatives want to "outdemocrat" the democrats. Personally that sounds like becoming a democrat to me.
If the Dems are going to make this a filibuster, they are going to lose. Any strategy that depends on raising the bar is not going to be popular politically.
Um...no.
And to each other.
We're all needlessly bloodied now, and the next nominee—no matter who it is—is going to be bloodied even further.
I hope and pray we have not been penny wise and pound foolish. I'm glad that's over, but I am not looking forward to the consequences.
