I dislike the yield to pedestrian laws like those here and in Boston.

The problem is and the reason there are so many pedestrian accidents is because pedestrians just step out in front of cars and expect them to go from 30 to 0 immediately.

It's much safer if pedestrians fend for themselves.

I don't see the problem. A driver sees the crosswalk markings in plenty of time to stop.

What a moronic view. The law is--vehicles yield to pedestrians in cross-walks. If you see someone in a cross-walk, stop your car. Don't get all macho about being is some big bulky car that can't stop on a dime. That's rarely required. Most cross-walks these days are marked on the pavement, and with signs on both sides of the roads. You would be courteous (and law-abiding) if you'd keep your eyes out for pedestrian in those obvious situations.
