LONDON, Oct 27 (KUNA) -- The reputation of the House of Commons was at risk if it did not investigate allegations about the financial probity of Respect Party MP George Galloway, a Labour former minister warned Thursday.
Denis MacShane compared the controversial MP to the infamous Nazi propagandist and convicted traitor William Joyce, known as "Lord Haw-Haw," who was hanged in London in 1946.
And he demanded that a joint committee of the House of Commons and US Congress be established to investigate the latest "serious allegations" about Galloway's links with the Iraq oil-for-food programme.
Galloway has challenged US senators to charge him with perjury over claims that he solicited money from the programme and lied about it under oath.
The US Senate committee investigating his alleged involvement in the saga claims to have discovered 85,000 pounds (150,000 dollars) in Iraqi oil money in his estranged wife's bank account.
And its chairman, Republican Senator Norm Coleman, has said this means Galloway lied under oath when giving evidence to the Senate Permanent Sub-committee on Investigations on May 17 this year, when he offered a passionate defence against similar claims.
But Galloway repeated denials that he had ever received any oil cash, and told Coleman to "put up or shut up" by either bringing a prosecution or dropping the allegations.
The committee's new report accused Galloway of personally soliciting and being granted eight oil allocations totalling 23 million barrels from the Saddam Hussein government between 1999 and 2003.
To shouts of support from MPs, MacShane asked the Minister responsible for Parliamentary Affairs Geoffrey Hoon to contact his opposite number in the US and establish the committee in order to "clear up this matter once and for all. "MacShane said he had alerted Galloway that he would be raising the matter today.
Mr. Lick Spittle himself. I actually find him very amusing, it's a shame he is so dangerous.
I would forgive Galloway if he would say, just once, "Captain, the engines just can't take the strain".
He's not dangerous, he's a clown. He's not going to win over a single person not already in agreement with his world view.
Wonder if they have the same punishment in store for him if/when their investigation shows that Galloway is also a traitor... (rhetorical wondering only)
Send Galloway to the gallows.
US - British tag team on his a**. Good deal. The lying so-and-so should swing.
Yes, Galloway is straight out of Bozo, Inc. If he weren't part of the ridiculous British political establishment he would probably be marching in a demonstration in Berkeley, right between the big fat broad with hairy legs and facial warts and the guy dressed up in an asparagus costume.
foul deeds will rise though all the earth o'erwhelm them from men's eyes.
Whatever he is, he isn't part of the establishment in the UK. He was thrown out of the Labour party, and the Conservatives would rather see him swing as much as entertain his views.
While we are about it that "ridiculous" political system has both of its major parties supporting the war on terror, unlike the system in a certain other country i could mention.
