Associates of I. Lewis Libby Jr., Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, expected an indictment on Friday charging him with making false statements to the grand jury in the C.I.A. leak inquiry, lawyers in the case said Thursday.
Karl Rove, President Bush's senior adviser and deputy chief of staff, will not be charged on Friday, but will remain under investigation, people briefed officially about the case said. As a result, they said, the special counsel in the case, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, was likely to extend the term of the federal grand jury beyond its scheduled expiration on Friday.
As rumors coursed through the capital, Mr. Fitzgerald gave no public signal of how he intends to proceed, further intensifying the anxiety that has gripped the White House and left partisans on both sides of the political aisle holding their breath.
Mr. Fitzgerald's preparations for a Friday announcement were shrouded in secrecy, but advanced amid a flurry of behind-the-scenes discussions that left open the possibility of last-minute surprises. As the clock ticked down on the grand jury, people involved in the case did not rule out the disclosure of previously unknown aspects of the case.
White House officials said their presumption was that Mr. Libby would resign if indicted, and he and Mr. Rove took steps to expand their legal teams in preparation for a possible court battle.
Among the many unresolved mysteries is whether anyone in addition to Mr. Libby and Mr. Rove might be charged and in particular whether Mr. Fitzgerald would name the source who first provided the identity of an undercover C.I.A. officer to Robert D. Novak, the syndicated columnist. Mr. Novak identified the officer in a column published July 14, 2003.

I dont' think they sit all year. My husband (who works very hard) was on a grand jury in New Jersey;IIRC it was once a week for 9 weeks.
Two years for a false statement charge. May as well extend it another two years, call back Rove a dozen more times, and see if he trips on on his words.
DISGUSTING. If this NYT article is accurate, and that's a big if, then this Fitzgerald guy is a partisan hack.
Yup. Fitz has evidence that Rove once had a dozen pizzas sent to Pelosi's office as a gag. He has the phone logs...the pizza delivery's records...it's over...over I tell you!!!
another example of there being no crime until there was an investigation.
Limbaugh has posited a theory that this was something hatched by Wilson and Plame , with CIA help, to topple the Bush Adminstration.
I drink every time I hear the word "scooter" used in place of an adult's name. It's not so much a drinking game as it is a natural reflex.
On Tucker Carlson's 11 pm live MSNBC show,
Buchanan keeps intimating our guys might have had something to do with the Italian forgeries. I don't buy that. Tucker and Buchanan both are just sure there is something huge Fitzgerald is going after, there has to be, they say, more than this rather simple straight foreward question of who leaked Plame's name.
Both seem to think there might be, as yet unknown, indictments, possibly of other Cheney staffers.
Buchanan is saying just what Rush has been saying about Bush's next Supreme Court pick.
Namely that Bush should go to war now, on getting a conservative judge. "that's what he came to Washington to do", said Pat.
BS.
I predicted the man they put on a pedestal will be crucified tomorrow if Rove is not indicted. Schumer said Fitz is a prosecutor's prosecutor. Hope he remembers those words before he blasts him for incompetence if it doesn't go his way. I will be the first to call his office to remind him.
You only got "Scooter" Libby (as if anyone outside of DC knows who that is!) IF the NYTs got something right for once!
YOUR PARTY may never see the White house for another twenty years after this mess! You can't win an election on issues so you have to have a court do it for you! Now you see why JUDGES are one of the MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES TO US!
When it first broke there was an article that said all of her neighbors knew she was in the CIA
Guess what, those neighbors and friends are left wing liars.
Both Tucker and Buchanen were stridently against the Iraq War from the beginning. Its also possible the extra info could be indictments of CIA officials and Wilson and Plame. Wouldnt that be a hoot.
What?
It often works out that way.
it's because Scotter has already been told and it could be the WH is leaking it.
BS.
Heh heh if the WH did leak it and they are both indicted or neither is indicted the NYT still has egg on it's face. Poetic justice. ( a little mistlerove for their Fitzmas)
