Lt. Gen. John A. Lejeune, often referred to as "the greatest of all Leathernecks," during his more than 40 years service with the Marine Corps, led the famed 2nd Division (Army) in World War I, and was Major General Commandant of the Marine Corps from June 1920 to March 1929. A birthday message he drafted during his tenure as the 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps is read every year at celebrations of the Marine Corps birth.Emphasis mine.
It's funny. I was stationed at Camp Lejeune for a while and, at Quantico, Lejeune Hall was the "Head Shed". But I never really knew anything about General Lejeune. Sure did hear a lot about Chesty Puller, though. And I've read a biography of him. What a guy!
