BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A U.S. soldier shot and killed one of three suicide bombers who attacked the Palestine Hotel complex before he could reach his intended target and that probably saved lives in the building, the military said Saturday.
In a statement on Monday's attack, the military confirmed for the first time that insurgents on the ground apparently lent support to the suicide bombers with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades in the well-coordinated strike on the hotel complex, where many foreign journalists live and work.
The three powerful explosions killed 17 Iraqis who were in the area at the time and wounded several people in the complex, the government said.
The attack involved three suicide car bombs. The first blew a hole in a cement wall protecting the complex. The second car exploded nearby as a possible diversion. Then a large cement mixer drove into the complex through the hole in the wall and exploded on a small road between the Palestine Hotel and the Sheraton Hotel, two 17-story buildings.

He may not have acted in the best interest of our Country....
That't what I'm talking about!!!
That's all very well, but let's wait and see what Cindy Sheehan and John F...ing Kerry have to say about it.
Once again in the greatest traditions of the US Army, a young, nameless soldier steps into the breach and carrys forward in a heroic manner to stop the enemy from his murderous rounds. This has happened countless times through our history (PVT Martin Treptow of RR's first State of the Union) and will continue to happen because these are the people who make up the REAL America.
God bless him and his buddies.

It used to be, you could use the word "scope" in context with firearms, and the general public understood what you were talking about. In fact, they probably still do, but reporters at the AP aren't the general public.
Bush ought to start a hero-of-the-week program. Each week, a military hero would be invited to spend a night in the Lincoln Bedroom, have breakfast with the president, receive their medals in a White House ceremony and tour historic sites in D.C.
The soldier in the story above would certainly be a deserving recipient.
Great idea. This would be a good PR move. I'm a worrier which does not do any good. This is a great opportunity to undermine the unrelenting negativity of the media.
Michele Malkin has a great post of a beautiful letter from a soldier who was killed - reminded me of the famous Civil War "letter to Sarah". The NYT selectively quoted it to take out the uplifting, beautiful parts.
I like your idea.
Those same journalists whose lives this soldier saved will stab he and his colleagues at arms in the back in the coming weeks. You can count on that.
Bump to your post.
I want to see if I can get other bloggers to pick up on the suggestion.
Glad you liked it. Go ahead and run with it. It's yours...
no it's yours and will be duly noted.
Quaker,
You are dead on target. Those same pencil pushers cant wait to repay GI Joe with a stab in the back.
Tonkin-Thought I could return the favor of some uplifting and heroic news.
Thanks, and thanks also for posting the original story. I remember seeing the video footage of this as it was first coming in from Baghdad. I'm proud of that soldier for staying true to his training and doing exactly what needed to be done. His reaction to the chaos was remarkable for its quickness and precision. Thanks to him, lives were saved.
