Yup. What I said on another thread:

Why it do the Rats consider this a striking defeat for Bush/conservatives?

Yeah, nominating Miers was a boneheaded move, but it's a new day. Bush made a mistake. He fixed it. He's still The Man.

Now, the WH strategerists are smart enough to look at everything that went on with the Miers nomination as a FREE TRIAL BALLOON.

THEY know how much support there is out there---where it counts, with the people---for a top-notch, unafraid, unabashed origninalist.

Moreover, they know that THE RATS now know how much support there is out there for same.

Bush has more cards in his hands than ever!

If the stupid RINOs give him grief, he now has proof the base will turn on them, too.

If the Rats give him grief and start that crap about a nominee who "unites," he now has proof that the political capital is on the side of nominating an originalist.

If the Senate judiciary committee gives him crap over an origninalist nominee, HE knows and THEY know that this time we'll have his back.

Of course, no one on Bush Team intended this, but the fact is that the Miers nomination focused the conservative mind wonderfully. There's real power in that fact and that power is on Bush's side (so long as he gets the nominee right this time).

Now we made it up to US to get the next nominee (assuming a good one) through.

Let's roll!

I don't think this was an "intentional decoy," but it has had the same result.

As I called it, it turned out to be a FREE trial balloon--meaning, it was intended as a trial balloon, but they got the same info as one hopes to get from floating a trial balloon: they have now gauged how deep and wide is the conservative committment to putting an originalist on the Court.

Actually, the conservatives have done everything they and caused the president of doing wha they accused Clinton of doing, abandoning a nominee like Lani Guineer.

We did become the party of angry white men ( and some women). We did change the rules to fit our agenda. With the appeals court nominees and Roberts the call was the Senate just needed to do an up or down. With Miers, they demanded to see her work. And it was republicans who were doing the demanding. We fractured, maybe momentarily, maybe more permanently the party glue so needed to move something forward. Similar to our claims of how Clinton lost health care because herding democrats was like hearding cats. Same with republicans on Miers

During the process we got into the politics of personal destruction, on our own side. We embarrased the President.

In the effort to claim Miers was the best qualified, we through the WH destroyed most of the other qualified women nominees by saying they didn't want to come under the scrutiny of the process because they had personal or family issues that would destroy the conservative movement. We sent up a red flag on each and everyone of them that there's something to be found, you've just got to look for it. And besides, if any now come forward, doesnt' that then make someone a liar?

We bacame everything we claimed the democrats were in the 90's.

If you get rid of the moderate Republicans, you don't have a base to win elections.

You're confusing a RINO politician that has betrayed the voters that elected them in the first place with someone elected to office claiming something different at least from the perspective I'm viewing.

It depends on where one is at of course, but conservatives can and do beat dems and RINOs so your point is well taken, but not necessarily true beyond a particular district.

Sounds like you have a lot more faith in the President than I do at this point. He seems to always be faithful to the liberals. I'm kind of tired of being ignored.

but the effect will be the same

As they say, sometimes it's better to be lucky than smart. Bush stumbled badly with the Miers pick, but he's going to reap the benefits of the unintended consequences of firing up the conservative base with his next nominee.

But by having been nominated and walked through the process as far as she did before withdrawing, Harriet Maiers America has had the chance to deepen its understanding of why a conservative justice is the right way to go.

Just thought I'd point this out..
If she is still part of the nomination process, Maiers will now have a personally enlightening experience to add to her "arsenal"..
She now knows a little better how to prepare the next nominee for the Senate..
The White House will be a little more prepared on the next candidate..

Thanks for the ping, John, and I'm so very sorry to hear about your roof/house. You have all undergone so many storms in Florida this year but it helps to know that you have a sister who wants you with her vs. a hotel.

I had the best brother in the world so we're lucky to have those siblings. You stay safe, John.

the hurricane destroyed most of my roof and the place is uninhabitable anyway. Insurance will take care of that.

Sorry to hear your problems but at least you are safe and didn't have bodily harm. Now don't get in any rush about the insurance taking care of the storm damage. I've been living mostly in motels since Kitrana's sister Rita came ashore and just yesterday an adjuster showed up at my house asking the neighbor if he knew how to get in touch with us as he didn't have a phone number. Very strange as we've given them the numbers numberous times in our contact with them.

But my only piece of advice is be patient and give them time to work through their claims. Do stay in touch with them and visit your cat site once in a while to discuss something with them if nothing more than getting them to pay some bill. Take care and good luck

We strengthened the Party and ultimately America by refusing to accede blindly to a stupid, ill-informed decision on a matter of overrarching importance.

We broke no laws and committed no sins by insisting on excellence and rejecting manifest mediocrity.

Exactly. He will have us dancing in the streets.

Joy is contagious and many Republicans and Independents less engaged or intense than the members of the conservative base will have a sunnier disposition and more confidence about the direction of the country--even if they are hard-pressed to explain why.

Watch Bush's approval numbers jump at least ten points.

On the other hand, the eterneally dyspepetic liberal moonbats will become more angry and morose. But if bile is all they have to offer as bait to the undecided, they will continue to waste away.

The conservative gave an intelligent debate on why they did not want her.

Or why they supported her (remember not everyone was against her) I see this debate as a healthy thing, assuming we can let bygones be bygone and remember that which unites us is greater then that which dives us.

One mans opinion (freely given and worth ALMOST that much) this is but a preview of the upcoming Presidental campaigning season.

Glad that you are safe.

Your roof and damaged parts of your house can be replaced, but you can't!

Give your great sister a hug for all of us.
