Of course once the number of displaced American born workers reaches a critical mass, the question will be do you want a large increase of income taxes, a new set of payroll taxes, or both? There is no free lunch.

I guess you don't understand how this will affect the future of America. Left as is, you won't be able to affort even the $400 computer, because the wage scale will be driven down pretty much across the board. In those third world countries, $400 is a few months wages? Would you like that?

Now, assume that there are no longer engineering jobs in the US simply because it makes no sense to spend a great deal of money to get a degree for which there are no jobs. That would mean that even defense related engineering would be outsourced. That is when the US would purchase defense equipment from abroad. Now, why would India or China need to sell the US first-tier defense equipment? They wouldn't. The US would be merely a third rate country, with those countries that make the exotic equipment the first rate countries.

The US is mighty because of American engineering, not American shoppong at Wal-Mart.

No they wont. Nike shoes are still over $100 despite costing them a good $5-$10 to be made and shipped here from some foreign sweat shop.

And if we sent all production overseas and brought in cheap immigrant labor to do everything, think of how cheap everything could be. Of course 10 cents might as well be 10,000 dollars if no Americans have any jobs and can't make any money. And if you think the idea of an American nobility living high on the hog with immigrant serfs doing all the work, I suggest reading some Byzantine history. Let's just say that Hagia Sophia didn't always have those minarets out front and the canons that smashed Istambul's walls was simply the end-game of a much longer process that bears an eerie resemblance to modern attitudes toward cheap immigrant labor.

Then tax the foreign goods, and make it competitive with the US goods.

I'd rather Americans have jobs.
