New Delhi (dpa) - Police raided hotels and guesthouses and detained several people on Sunday seeking leads about the serial blasts in New Delhi that claimed 59 lives and triggered panic among thousands ahead of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.
India's Home Ministry said 114 people had been injured in the Saturday's blasts. Two bombs exploded at busy marketplaces while another exploded outside a bus in the Indian capital.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condemned the attacks as "dastardly acts of terrorism" that were meant to create disaffection among communities in the festive season.
Diwali is to be celebrated on November 1, followed by the Moslem festival of Eid later on in the week.
"We shall defeat their (terrorists') nefarious designs and not allow them to succeed," he said.
Major cities across the country were placed on high alert after the blasts. Delhi was on "red alert" and its borders had been sealed.
No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack thus far, but local media reported that the Delhi police had secured definite clues into the attack.
Police and security agencies had combed the blast sites throughout Saturday night to determine the nature of explosives used in the attacks.
At least 12 people have been detained since Saturday evening. The IANS news agency reported that over 50 people were also being questioned by the police.
Police suspect that Pakistan-based militant groups Lashkar-e-Toiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed behind the blasts, the NDTV network reported.
At Sarojini Nagar, which was worst-affected by the blasts, daybreak revealed the magnitude of the tragedy. Debris and charred remains lay strewn across the market where nearly 40 people lost their lives. People frantically searched the blast sites and hospitals for their missing relatives.
Shiv Narain Pandey, who runs a cigarette shop in Sarojini Nagar said, "My relative was visiting me from my native place and was at the market when the blast took place. I have gone to at least three hospitals through the night but there is no trace of him."
Shopkeepers at Paharganj market where the first blast took place were defiant. "We will not bow down to terrorists. The market association has decided to keep the shops open and the market will function as normal," Raj Kumar Chawla, a shopkeeper said.
However, Delhi residents were clearly shaken by the attack. Not many people ventured into markets on Sunday morning. Sunday is "Dhanteras" when Hindus do the bulk of their shopping for Diwali.
The Dhanteras day is considered auspicious for buying metal utensils, jewellery and other items.
Those darn baptists at it again I presume?
Do I need the sarcasm tag?
Islam has comming on the verge of extinction. One last crusade from the non-Muslim world will annihilate Islam for good.
The candle burn most brightly when its about to be extinguished.
This is just religion of peace's normal way to say thank you for all the aid and medical services India has provided for the earthquake victims.
Not so easy when they're in your backyard. My sympathies to the Indian people. (Specifically the Hindus.)
My sympathies as well.
I pray for the injured.
I pray for the murdered.
Even though I hate the guts of Pakistan's terrorist links and origins, I still believe there is 70% of Pakistani population that would like to build a decent enough country out of the hell hole called Pakistan and live.
Sure, they will continue to hate Indians and will keep fighting the Kashmir issue, but at least not foment this type of brutality.
Well, I can hope......
You are right in a way. While the victims were of mixed backgrounds (and possibly nationalities - market frequented by tourists), the symbolic target ware Hindus celebrating the most popular festival Diwali this week. But, we pray for all victims, and resolve to BEAT back these Ba$tards.
Full disclosure - I am from India and Hindu.
The terrorists (read Islam) has been in our back yard for the last 1000 years. For the last thousand years we have been fighting them and we will go in fighting them for as long as it takes.
A big majority of pakistanis are now being educated in the Saudi sponsored wahabi maddrass schools. It teaches the most violent, anti-christian, anti-jewish, anti-hindu hatred anywhere these days.
No matter how many decent people potentially might live in that country, its being overun by Saudi sponsored militant islam.
Exactly. And, just like Iran, the challenge is in separating the two, and gutting the radicals while allowing the rest to build a decent (and free) country.
There needs to be a LONG-TERM project like the one being undertaken in Iraq. In the mean time, a more heavy military response against these thugs' hideouts is needed.
LOL! It been a long time since I have been to the Pakidefecation forum. The self styled defense experts on the forum comes up with hilarious analysis and strategies like :
1 Muslim = 20 Hindus and so they will win the war
Pakistan can take out the Indian carrier battle group with 100 patrol boats laden with explosives.
And the forum members get regularly terrorised by "Hindus" trolls spoiling their party.
Its a sad thing about the internet. It's brought a lot of positives to the world,
but with the middle east, its acts as a massive stupidity amplifier.
Pakistan can take out the Indian carrier battle group with 100 patrol boats laden with explosives.
That's your typical muslim military strategy there. Explains why why they have been utter failures for centuries now.
"Explains why why they have been utter failures for centuries now."
Actually those guys believe they have won every war against India up till now.
"One last crusade from the non-Muslim world will annihilate Islam for good."
I'm all for it ! Let's roll......
Think of it ; 50 years from now and Islam has ceased to exist on this Planet . What a dream come true!
