Republican Party Backing Duds (New York)

Presidents Report Ken Mathison. SCOPE President

So far the Republican Party has given us a couple of Duds in their choices for competition against Hillary Clinton and Eliot Spitzer. Westchester DA Jeanine Pirro is the Party candidate of choice, so far, to challenge Hillary but she is at best Hillary Lite and some say she is just a Hillary clone.

Her record is decidedly anti-gun, having supported Governor Pataki’s gun package in 2000 and she has recently publicly stated “the assault weapon ban should never been allowed to expire”. She also proudly proclaims her “Broad Blue Stripes” on other social issues. Just what we need is another RINO!

The Republican Party leadership has so far ignored candidates with far better traditional conservative Republican values; Manhattan attorney Ed Cox and former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer. Both have far better conservative credentials than Ms Pirro and both are solid pro-Second Amendment candidates. In the Governor’s race, the Party favorite is former Massachusetts governor William Weld, another RINO. I contacted the Gun Owners Action League (GOAL) in Massachusetts for their input on Mr. Weld and he appears to be a Pataki clone who said one thing to get elected and did another once in office. He also pushed for anti-gun legislation after talking pro-gun to get elected.

Assemblyman Pat Manning of Dutchess and Columbia counties has recently announced his candidacy for governor. Pat Manning along with others passionately debated against the anti-gun bills passed in May by the Assembly. He would be an excellent choice for governor of New York.

The only other brand name candidate (besides Rudy, who insists he doesn’t want to be governor) being talked about is Rochester billionaire Tom Golisano who has run unsuccessfully for governor three times. Mr. Golisano certainly has the money needed to run an effective campaign and he comes across as a conservative on the issues but if he runs again he needs to hire better campaign managers this time. He certainly didn’t get his $72 million worth out of the last ones.

We have yet to hear from the Conservative Party on their choices for opponents for Clinton and Spitzer. We can only hope that they will live up to their name and give us candidates that actually believe in something, candidates we can get excited about.

……..Speaking of Duds

The New York State Combined Ballistic Identification System known as CoBIS has been in effect for over four years now and is still a complete failure.

The system was part of Governor Pataki’s gun law package passed in 2000 and requires that all new handguns sold in New York be test fired and the shell casings from those guns be entered into a computer database for the purpose of tracing crime scene evidence.

Since its inception data from over 106,000 handguns have been entered into the system and to date the system has yet to record a single “hit” on a crime gun trace. At an initial start up cost of $4 million and an estimated annual (the cost of this system is buried in the State Police budget) cost of between $2 and $4 million this system is a monumental waste of taxpayer money and the valuable resources of the State Police. Further proof of its failure is the fact that forensic experts, with the exception of a single test of federal ballistic information, have accessed the system less than 300 times in over four years. Considering the amount of gun crime New York is supposed to have, this figure is incredibly low for a system that was touted as major crime fighting tool. In fact, forensic experts are on record as stating the system is useless to them as a crime fighting tool.

Additionally, the State Police of Maryland recently recommended that their legislature repeal their slightly older system for being equally ineffective and wasteful of resources. The Maryland report cited the failure of the much larger New York system as a prime reason for their recommendation.

Despite this proven failure of a system, Governor Pataki and Democrats in the Assembly and Senate want to expand the system to include all rifles and shotguns! There are far more rifles and shotguns sold in New York than handguns and such an expansion of this system would overwhelm the State Police with more useless work.

Since 9/11 the work load of the State Police has increased dramatically and servicing this useless, politically motivated ballistic database system increases the chances that a terrorist may slip through their hands because officers are wasting time cataloging handgun evidence from a purchase by a licensed, law abiding citizen.

Governor Pataki has a chance to right a politically motivated wrong before he leaves office by pushing for repeal of the CoBIS system. He will have to stand up against the powerful anti-gun industry lobby and Sheldon Silver so it’s doubtful he will have the courage to do so.

Rudy need to enter the Senate race against Hillary.
He should file to run on the very last day of the filing deadline.

That will put Hillary between a rock and a hard place, and vanquishing Hillary will greatly boost Giuliani's chances for the 2008 GOP primary.

Just like the Cal GOP. One might wonder whether or not they were paid DNC operatives. Everything they touch turns to s***.

Yep, and im one of them. I am a freedom loving-gun owning american living in the deep blue state of NY. I was born and raised here. Each year this state passes more and more BS gun law's that only the law abiding will follow. The whole gun control agenda of the NY politicians are a total failure. Just look at NYC. They have some of the toughest gun control errr i mean citizen control laws in the nation and they still have a huge underground gun market involving the 'fine young entrapeneurs' in NYC housing projects (sarc).

Its time to move out of this state, It is beyond repair.
