Though he is Palestinian by birth and by political disposition, when director Hany Abu-Assad began thinking about suicide bombers in the occupied territories of the West Bank, he imagined them as heartless monsters. "Like anybody else," he says, "I thought they had been brainwashed."
In the film "Paradise Now," the final hours of a pair of auto mechanics who have been recruited as bombers are recounted, and the last thing the young men appear to be is unthinking. Abu-Assad used the interrogation transcripts of actual bombers who had failed to strike their targets when he was writing the script for the movie, which opens Friday in San Francisco and Nov. 11 in the South Bay, following its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
"When you do research, you discover two things," he says. "You are shocked that there is enormous human depth in these kinds of people. They may make the wrong decision, but there is humanity in their thoughts. And secondly, you are in shock that you were so ignorant. It is obvious that they are human beings! How could I think that they weren't human beings, that they were monsters?"
Abu-Assad says humanizing the bombers in "Paradise Now" is "not the goal of the film, it is the starting point." It is sure to be a controversial position, especially in places where terrorists are not an abstract threat but the bringers of real pain and death. That includes Israel, whose people Abu-Assad says he respects, but whose subjugation of the Palestinian people he deplores. He believes that it is the occupation that has led to the bombings, not the other way around.

All that it would take is for some person with "humanity in their thoughts" to denounce him on some Islamist web site as an American or Israeli collaborator, and then he would have a first-hand opportunity to rethink whether or not it is obvious that they are monsters.

Obviously, his "research" didn't including helping to pick up the body parts and comfort the grieving families of his subject's victims. Give it ten years, and we'll see the faces of suicide bombers on tee shirts and posters, much like we do with Che Guevera now.
First, let's call them what they are, murderers. The fact that they die in the process is the only good thing to come out of it. I don't really care what motivates them. The instant they strap on a bomb and set out to kill just anyone who happens to be near them, they have lost all rights to sympathy, understanding, or heaven.

I question the humanity of the author, who is obviously as insane as his subjects.

Islam has a fourteen hundred year track record of death worship. If there are no infidels to kill, they kill one another. Granting a homeland to the palestinians will solve nothing. It will only provide a staging area for further atrocities.

Then when they actually figure out it could well be their next door neighbor ready to blow them up, they get all teary eyed about how "human" the killers are. It is actually a very normal reaction to the shock of facing reality. by humanizing the killers it gives "them" an excuse for doing nothing to stop this carnage. Thus they actually become PART of the terrorists MO.
