The problem is, to do that, they will have to disavow their association with much of their radical rabid, nutball base. Middle Class, Middle American Voters are not going to embrace gay marriage, transgender rights, NAMBLA in the Boy Scouts... The dems are in a NO WIN situation.
They have allowed their party to be taken over by small, loud rabid groups that don't represent what the vast majority believe in. To try to attract middle america they have to cut off large portions of what is now their "base"... and to do that would require the Dems to accept large defeats for several cycles while they purge their party... unfortunately though, they won't do that.... so they will continue to embrace the absurd, while trying to play the middle... and they will fail and alienate generations of voters as well.
The dems want to win elections again at the national level they MUST purge their party of the socialist/communist nutballs that make up their rabid base. However to do that, they will have to endure short term pain, perhaps a decade.. where they will lose elections no doubt as they attempt to reestablish the party with folks from the more main stream ideas.... However they don't want that.. so they continue on this rabid track, and they are alienating entire generations of Voters in the process.
