Fernando Ferrer says because its an election year, the city is getting cleaner. He was at a Harlem River ballpark Wednesday taking issue with its conditions.
Right before the event, city workers were out picking up garbage. Ferrer claims its because they knew he was going to shed some light on the mess.
The clean up crew here left recently. I wish we had time to go to all the subway stations and all the parks in this city that have been left behind to make sure that they were clean," said Ferrer.
NY1 saw one worker collecting garbage. The Ferrer campaign also released photographs showing the cleanup crew. But a Parks Department spokesman says crews clean that park every day.
Pointing out trash and signs of neglect, like missing wooden planks on the benches, Ferrer is illustrating his campaign theme of two New Yorks, one for the rich and one for the poor. It's a theme he will continue to hammer home until Election Day.
The Parks Department says $4.5 million is set aside to renovate the ballpark starting in the spring, but Ferrer is hoping he'll be the mayor overseeing the project.
Ferrer is trying to pull out all the stops as the final countdown begins to Election Day. At City College in Harlem, he attended a rally once again with Democratic National Committee Chair Howard Dean to get out the vote.
Your vote will decide the future of this city. Your vote will decide the destiny of all of us who want a better life, who want to meet hope and opportunity halfway, and who wants to build an even better city than we found, said Ferrer. Are you with me?"
"I think this is all about turnout, said Dean. I have no doubt in my mind that Freddy Ferrer can be the next mayor if our folks turn out."
But turnout may not be enough for Ferrer, as polls show that plenty of Democrats are preparing to cross party lines.
History has shown he does finish stronger than some predict, but with a 30-point gap, Ferrer is grasping for anything to help him close in.
Howard Dean will not bring in a single net new vote for Ferrer and may actually lose him votes in NYC.
Mr. Ferrer couldn't turnout a windbreaker.
And Howard Dean? : I'm not really a politician, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Select last night!"
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant, Howie. You've figured out that elections are usually decided on the basis of the people who vote in them. Say, any thoughts on cold fusion?
I think it would be more effective and, symbolically, more
fitting that he campaign with Howard Stern.
I don't care who Ferrer is. All I want to see is Bloomberg lose.
Not even real Puerto Ricans like him:
Mayoral campaign whines
aren't aging well

If you think Bloomberg's anti-Ferrer radio ads in New York are tough, you should hear what Puerto Rico's largest radio station has to say about him.
Noti Uno, Puerto Rico's biggest, all-news station, ran an on-air editorial about 100 times last week that blasted Ferrer for only coming to the island when he needs votes.
"Has Fernando Ferrer been in Puerto Rico when we needed him - when a hurricane strikes us, and when floods take away the little things we have left?" the editorial asked.
"When have we seen Fernando Ferrer in Puerto Rico?" it added. "Very easy ... When he's running in the primaries, and now that he is running for mayor in New York City."
Aides to Ferrer responded by calling Noti Uno a "Republican-leaning" station, while noting that at least three other Puerto Rican radio stations have been pushing Ferrer's candidacy.
Choosing between Bloomberg and Ferrer is like choosing between Herpes and the Clap.
