Don't blame the politicians. As the article states:

Thieves will always outnumber the honest in a pure democracy. And this was the will of the thieves.

If this country ever had a national referendum in which the following was proposed:

Shall we enslave 10 percent of the working population so that 90 percent can do without work.

It would pass easily with somewhere close to 90 percent of the vote. We have completed the process of becoming a society of two wolves and one sheep voting on what's for dinner.
