ADL's Foxman warns of efforts to 'Christianize America'
Haaretz ^ | Novembe 6, 2005 | Shlomo Shamir

Posted on 11/06/2005 8:37:39 AM PST by rcocean

The ADL, considered the largest Jewish organization in America, has in the past spearheaded campaigns against religious preachers and Christian elements deemed unusually extreme. But this is the first all-out media assault by an ADL head on the U.S. Christian establishment.

He noted that churches and organizations of this sort have always been active in America, but they had never before been so aggressive and determined. "They intend to Christianize all aspects of American life, from the halls of government to the libraries, to the movies, to recording studios, to the playing fields and locker rooms of professional, collegiate and amateur sports; from the military to SpongeBob SquarePants," Foxman charged. "No effort is made to hide their goals or their ambitions, and their vision of America is far different from ours."

Interesting viewpoint. The ADL needs to stir up fears. Jews open up those pocketbooks, Abe needs your money.

Even the ADL should have the common sense to understand that morality is an important aspect of Christian teachings. I would think he would understand the need for that, seeing what immorality had done to his people in centuries past.

Mr. Foxman has one great deal less to be worried about from Christians than certain Islamic types who seem rather focused on his personal, national and theological extinction. Know your enemy.

The ACLU and ADL Foxman make a nice team.
All it takes is money, media power, a few legislators who can use the ca$h and a hatred of .... something .... anything....to get the ball rolling.

Sorry Abe, you're centuries too late.

America was 'Christianized' a very long time ago.

That's why she's always been so great.

As has every nation whose God was the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Too bad for you that you've willfully blocked that out of your socialist memory...

As a Jew, I am embarrassed by this statement. There is real antisemitism actually exists and should be identified and opposed. But the charge of "Christianizing" America, even if it exists to some degree, is not a threat to Jews. I run into people who try to convert me all the time. Not only do they fail, I always feel a renewed strength of my personal faith when they fail. The threat to Jews is not an increase of religiosity, it is the increase of secularism. The more our government respects the rights of religious people, the more rights Jews will have. A rising tide lifts all boats.

The problem is that Foxman and gang have cheapened the phrase "antisemitic" to nothing more than a phrase.

Non-Jews read this stuff and it does not win Jews/Israel and it does not win us friends.

In Foxman's defense, he did say, a few years ago, that it isn't wise to play the anti-semitism card any time something/someone Jewish is critiqued/analyzed/discussed/etc. I was a bit surprised at the time he said it.

Exactly correct.

As a Jew I too am embarassed and incenced by Mr Foxman's statements. I have contacted my local ADL office to register my displeasure and let them know that, as a result of their left-leaning political positioning, they shouldn't bother to contact me this year requesting a donation.

My reasons are exactly the same as they were last year. Until they confine themselves to their stated goals, rather than Democratic political posturing, as far as this Jew is concerned, they do not exist.

From the exerpt:

"They intend to Christianize all aspects of American life, from the halls of government to the libraries, to the movies, to recording studios, to the playing fields and locker rooms of professional, collegiate and amateur sports; from the military to SpongeBob SquarePants," Foxman charged. "No effort is made to hide their goals or their ambitions, and their vision of America is far different from ours."

And just who is "They"? Sounds as if Abe is trying to conjure up the boogy man. The Paranoid Transformational Marxists (can't call them liberals, even though they've hijacked the word) keep setting up these straw men, and never seem to get around to naming specific groups or individuals.

There's a simple reason that names aren't mentioned...when that happens, the facts get in the way of a good rant, and it makes the "rantee" look like an idiot.

While in the abstract i strongly agree with you, please allow me a bit of amusement in that i will parse the above statement:

And just who are "the Christians"? What makes one a "Christian"? Are they born "Christian", or proselitised? Do they hold to a specific dogma, or merely a tradition and culture?

My point is that Mr. Foxman has to stick with broad generalities, because he gets stuffed by facts when he attempts to name groups or individuals who are not part of the "lunatic fringe" that exists among any group (such as perhaps...the ADL?). i wonder if Mr. Foxman considers Louis Farrakan (spell?) a Christian?

I read it as a serious use of sarcasm to state a point.

I should let him speak for himself, perhaps, but we need not knee-jerk react when the antagonist left would prefer us to do so.

"The more our government respects the rights of religious people, the more rights Jews will have. A rising tide lifts all boats."

Very well-said, by the way. Thanks. Don't hold your breath, however, because family and faith are the two greatest enemies of the state.

Yet another Moral Absolutes Ping.

Yes, the effort to remove God and the Judeo-Christian heritage of this country which is the very foundation of freedom. Just in time for the "Holiday" [now which holiday is that, exactly?] Season.

Note this from Thomas Jefferson:

"Where the preamble declares that coercion is a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion, an amendment was proposed, by inserting the words "Jesus Christ," so that it should read, "a departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion"; the insertion was rejected by a great majority, in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and the Mahometan, the Hindoo, and Infidel of every denomination."

(About the Constitution of the State of Virginia...an alert freeper posted a link to the whole thing. Anyway, proof that Jefferson and other founders were in favor of religious tolerance, not repression of any religious expression.)

Freepmail me if you want on/off this pinglist.

Note: Most religious (as opposed to merely ethnic/secular) Jews have no problem with Christmas decorations, celebrations and so on. In fact, many appreciate the religious freedom that enables fellow believers in God to be able to express and celebrate religious holidays.

It's usually called the Religious Right, although they are desperately trying to retitle them "Christian Fundamentalists" in an effort to link their imaginary boogeyman group to Islamic Radicals.

Like the Militia Movement, it's a both a straw man and a boogeyman. There have been chicken littles moaning about hostile takeovers from militias and conspiracies to impose theocracies for as long as I've been alive.

Don't worry, Abe. The muzzies are coming and they're going to impose a quaint brown-skinned indigenous concept called "sharia" that you won't object to because it represents "the other" rather than the bigoted redneck hinterlands.

I've always known Foxman was a liberal blowhard, but now I begin to suspect the man is literally mentally ill.

This is both hate speech, and, a fact.

Well stated. Christians are the strongest and sometimes, the only supporters of Israel these days. Many of us celebrate our Jewish friends and our common heritage.

It is typical of Foxman and the left to see Christians hiding behind every building in their imaginary world. Jews and Christians are the capstone of faith and light in this country.

Foxman is an embarassment to Jews. Although carefully avoiding the pitfalls of having a state religion, America was founded by Christians, with Christian ethics, and, although tolerant of most other religions, has been unapologetically Christian ever since, at least culturally. The actuality is that for the last 30 or 40 years it is Christianity that has been under attack in America, not the reverse as Foxman asserts.

I am usually pretty sensitive to what I perceive as anti Semitism, perhaps sometimes seeing it where it may not be truly intended. But although I tend not to be a particular admirer of much of what is known as the "Religious Right," it's worth noting that there is also, for whatever reason, a good bit of anti Christianity in today's America.
