Times have changed, though. The NYPD got its stones back when Rudy hit the scene (hardly a week goes by that I don't intone 'It's Giulliani Time!' in appropriate times!
I don't think the NYPD in 2005/2006 and in the near future would let such a thing get out of control (certainly nothing like France these last couple of weeks). And the typical race hustlers the morning after won't have much to go on, I suspect.
I could be way, way offbase on this, though. It's a hard one to call, admittedly. I wish it wasn't.

Crown Heights, if you remember, started off real small. Then it grew -- never huge, but big enough -- through neglect. The cops in Paris should have taken a course in it.
The individual cops in the NYPD never lost their stones during Dinkins, but it got to the point where it was just ridiculous. It became a question of: Why bother? Remember when Dinkins sided with the drug dealer uptown?
