Six Franklin teenagers were arrested Saturday night after reportedly driving off-road through a Shelby County wetland.
The teens were arrested on charges of criminal mischief and criminal trespass. Shelby County sheriff’s deputies released the teens to their parents, chief deputy Mike Bowlby said....
...Sue Webb said she wanted part of the land to be restored so the public could learn more about wetlands and appreciate nature.
The year-old project, named Zachariah Webb Wetlands, is being restored by Joe DeHart, a Johnson County wetland developer and former Johnson County commissioner.

We have wetlands in Shelby county????? I don't think so. Maybe it's wet because it just rained. I didn't think we had these enviro weenies here in Indiana, other than Monroe county.
Seems they do appreciate nature and did some fun off-roading.
Seems better then racing down streets & parking lots.
Thats what struck me! Enviroweenies have infiltrated Shelby county....I now live in N.E. Ohio, where wetlands and enviroweenies abound....BEWARE THE WETLANDS!

We had swamps when I was a kid.
We had a reporter touting one of our wonderful swamps. She was being eaten alive by mosquitos on the air. It was amusing. It was an excellent documentary" on why swamps should be drained.
Sorry, I just can't get all worked up about the arrest of kids who go around ruining the landscape for fun.
Off-roading is not 'nature' by any stretch of the imagination. Sounds like a bit of NIMBY. I'd rather they 'race' in their 'hood - maybe their neighborhood cops will shoot 'em before the children run-down a little old lady.
The area where I live was indeed swampland when the whiteman moved in, but it's been drained for about 150 years. There are isolated wet spots close to the rivers but I'm sure whether I would call them wetlands. They are usually just low places that get covered with water when I t rains and the river comes up. Of course these places are wet because they are low. But, does that make them wetlands?
I am originally from southeast Mo., which still is referred to by some as swampeast Mo. At the turn of the century the gov. formed the Little River Drainage District and drained huge areas of swamp, and private industry harvested the timber. It is some of the most productive farm land in the world now, with small towns and industry all over.
That could not happen in this day and age. Gotta protect the frogs and fishes you know.

The land mentioned in the article in Indiana is about 15 miles south of an area that was called the Great Gulf by early settlers (swamp).
It was properly drained in the mid 1800s and is some of the best farmland in the midwest (Clark Twp., for you Hoosiers).
Can you imagine if enviroweenies were around when the country was settled? We'd be living with no industry in a primeval forest with swamps and a few roads....hey wait a minute....sounds like Louisiana!
Wetlands in Indiana are a relatively new scam, not like Ohio, where it is an artform.
I believe it can be either a County or a State Wetland. By the sound of it, this one is still at the County level.
Notice there are multiple opportunities for land grabs either by counties or the state itself (perhaps even townships).
I am thinking the scam is in dumping some water on the ground, then maybe making sure it stays wet and collecting a management fee.
Good call....Management Fee, Directors, Developers, ad nauseum.
The Federal Law covers all states. The State Laws have somewhat different criteria. Sometimes they overlap. We had a great battle here with the state agency when I was young. We won but it took a lot of work to "shove it down their throats".
