WAL-MART BANS CHRISTMAS: BOYCOTT LAUNCHED
Catholic League ^ | 9 November 2005 | William Donohue

WAL-MART BANS CHRISTMAS:

BOYCOTT LAUNCHED

A woman who recently complained to Wal-Mart that the store was replacing “Merry Christmas” with “Happy Holidays” received an e-mail response from Customer Service. It appears below in its exact form:

“Walmart is a world wide organization and must remain conscious of this. The majority of the world still has different practices other than ‘christmas’ which is an ancient tradition that has its roots in Siberian shamanism. The colors associated with ‘christmas’ red and white are actually a representation of of the aminita mascera mushroom. Santa is also borrowed from the Caucuses, mistletoe from the Celts, yule log from the Goths, the time from the Visigoth and the tree from the worship of Baal. It is a wide wide world.”

To which Catholic League president Bill Donohue says: “This statement was signed by someone called Kirby. When I read it, I thought he might be drunk. But I was wrong. We sent Kirby’s response to Wal-Mart’s headquarters only to find that Dan Fogleman, Senior Manager, Public Relations, agrees. After acknowledging that he read Kirby’s response, Fogleman said, in part, the following”:

“As a retailer, we recognize some of our customers may be shopping for Chanukah or Kwanza gifts during this time of year and we certainly want these customers in our stores and to feel welcome, just as we do those buying for Christmas. As an employer, we recognize the significance of the Christmas holiday among our family of associates…and close our stores in observance, the only day during the year that we are closed.”

Bill Donohue says: “It’s nice to know that Wal-Mart is closed on a federal holiday. Now here is why I am asking the leaders of 126 religious organizations that span seven religious communities to boycott Wal-Mart. Go to its website and search for Hanukkah and up come 200 items. Click on Kwanzaa and up come 77. Click on Christmas, and here’s what you get: ‘We’ve brought you to our ‘Holiday’ page based on your search.’ In other words, Wal-Mart is practicing discrimination.”

Why would Walmart be concerned about the Visigoths and the details of worshipping Baal?

Bothering me? Naw. I post and move on. Personally, I hope the perpetually peeved herebouts make good on their threat so that there'll be more space at Wal-Mart for me!

I think people are making a mountain out of a molehill here. The reason that Christmas brings you back to a generic holiday page is there are too many items for a consumer to search through. Do you want Christmas trees or Christmas cards, or Christmas paper, or Christmas ornaments, or etc.. Without narrowing the search, the consumer would have to go through 8,000 items to find what they are looking for. With Hannakuh or Kwaanza, the search results are much smaller allowing the consumer to find their item rather quickly.

At least we now know where your tast lies.

I, on the other hand, will have no trouble boycotting Walmart, whether they are guilty of this discrimination or not. I rarely set foot inside Walmart doors.

Here's another tidbit. When Oliver Cromwell was Lord Protector, Christmas was essentially outlawed in England. Businessmen were forced to stay open for business.

The Puritans in early American refused to celebrate Christmas, believing that it was from the devil. Christmas came to the USA primarily with Catholic immigrants.

Walmart allows Salvation Army red kettles bell ringing and Target does not, so I prefer shopping at Walmart now.

You can thank lawyers and [I think] the Hare Krishnas for that. Go ahead and shop at Target.

My mother-in-law bought my daughter and niece the cutest little fashion dolls. They were little girls dressed in little girl clothing. They are called Katie dolls. At Big Lots I also got some fairy tale dolls that were cute also.

Hey Budge; what do you know about this?

First I've heard of it. I think we still celebrate Christmas in Pine Bluff, but I could be wrong.

Many places say Happy Holidays, I respond with Merry Christmas. Political Correctness is going to kill this country. Nobody seems to have the wherewithall to stand up for what they believe, easier to patronize the few I guess.

This is the official website of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights. The link to the press release is mounted prominently on the default page and dated November 9th. I don't think this is bogus.

It's Christmas time, already? I have been sooooo busy at work:'( Got to pay those taxes for those who won't work, you know?) Anyway, this is my 4th or 5th season on FR. Every year the Merry Christmas vs happy holidays come up:') My favorite thing to do is ask , what holiday are we celebrating? When I'm told Christmas, I respond with "oh, well, Merry Christmas" and it's usually returned..

Sad. The colors red and white are part of Christian symbolism as well which should need no explanation. You find them on the flag of medieval England, known as the Cross of St. George and on the Holy Shroud. The garments of St. Nicholas (red and white) have nothing to do with Siberian pagan shamanism.
