EX-CBS producer Mary Mapes, fired over a controversial "60 Minutes II" story on President Bush's National Guard service, says she still believes the report was "true" — and accurate.
"No one has proved that the documents were not authentic," Mapes says on this morning's "Good Morning America."
Mapes is breaking her silence to promote her new book, "Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power."

She says she "did not have it in for George Bush" and says she doesn't feel responsible for what happened to her colleagues in the scandal's aftermath.

What Mapes doesn't dispute is the fact that she called a member of John Kerry's presidential campaign before the "60 Minutes II" report aired.
"I wish to God I hadn't done it, because I think it was so widly misinterpreted," she says - adding that she only made the call to curry favor with the source who gave her the disputed documents.
"I don't think that I committed bad journalism. I really don't," she says.
Mapes says she's continuing to investigate the source of the documents.

If she ever gets another job, I can't wait to see Mary's report on such other unimpeachable documents as the Protocols of the Elders of Zion or the Hitler Diaries.

If she sticks to this absurd story-line, she will get so teed up by someone soon. After all, GMA was only her first TV interview.

This woman is absolutely shameless!
The reason she has an 'unblemished' prior record is simply because she wasn't caught before!
I once thought she was perhaps being made the scapegoat here, but listening to her, you realize she has no professional scruples whatsoever, nor even a clue as to where to get them!

My thoughts exactly!! I know, we could say; "Prove Saddam hadn't WMD!", the next time some liberal brings the WMD issue up (again)!!!
Mary, you didn't lose your job because nobody could prove those memoes were fake, you lost your job because you steered the person who gave you the fake memoes over to the DNC.

Nobody has suggested any possible method by which they might be authentic that has not been thoroughly and finally disproven.
Moreover, Microsoft Word produces a nearly identical document with its default settings, and an identical document with one minor adjustment.
In the face of all that, how can any honest person not agree that the documents are the crudest of forgeries?
When caught in a lie, Mapes' response is to defend the lie. No surprise. To do otherwise, she would be admitting she was either a dupe or complicit in the original lie.
