He was willing to risk a lot in the name of a principle. It wasn't like it would be today.

I don't know that he ever did that, but he was the ONLY Muslim after 9-11 to come out publicly to denounce that as an act of terror and not a reflection of any religion.
At least that is the memory I have of him then.

Ali went to jail and did his time. BTW, Robert Heinlein was against conscription, too-and he was hardly what you'd call left wing. And yes, I do think Jane Fonda was a traitor.
BTW, I'm betting that even in his condition Ali could knock you on your ass.

He went to jail rather than ducking the draft to Canada and he came immediately out after 9-11 to denounce that event as a total act of murder and terror and nothing to do with religion.
Say what you will about the guy, I think he does have his principles and guts. This is a real man, despite my total disagreement with his politics and religious beliefs.

Hey, what's the weather up by you at this time like?
We here in California are slipping at night already into the high 50s and we have some heavy misting at this time.
We are very moderate with the weather out here.
Have things already frozen over by you?
I ask because I don't know...

He is both a great American and a hero to all in America!!!He was a great fighter and a superb showman.
But I wouldn't call him a hero.

You are certainly entitled to your own opinion.
A right you have no thanks to anything he did.
He posed, while BETTER MEN bled and died.
Don't try to blow smoke up my kilt, I was there.
This "Medal" is an insult to every name on a certain Black Granite Wall in Washington D.C.
There is nothing any of you can say or do that would stop me from calling bullsh!t on this latest in a long line of insults to Vietnam vets.
We're used to it.

I disagree with his politics as well, and he was an uneducated man, so I think there is a good reason for his bad decisions.
It is easier to lead an uneducated person down wrong paths, especially when they get lots of attention from being famous.
I give him credit for going to jail instead of running to Canada.
I also give him credit to almost immediately in the days following 9-11 to come out and denounce this not as a religious act of a faith, but as a criminal act of terror.
Even you have to say, with the little that all other Muslims have said against Islamic terrorists, Ali was impressive compared to the rest of the world leaders of that cult.

By the way, you can almost bet the farm that Orrin Hatch who persuaded Bush to make this award to Muhammad Ali. Hatch loves celebrities, and Ali has been one his faves for decades.

Ali was a Conscientuous Objector, and was ruled so by the Supreme Court. There's a difference between that and running away to Canada. The problem was, he WAS NOT a conscientuous objector until his draft number came up.

"Again, where in the constitution does it say that "one must be forced to take a government job" by law?
Military conscription is UNAMERICAN!"
I'll try and remember that quip when I next visit a Civil War monument, WW I monument, WW II monument ...
America called and those who rose to the challenge to defend her, either by volunteering or by answering their draft letters, are HEROS ... Those who RAN are ZEROS!!!

Ali's motor functions are getting worse all the time but HIS MIND is as sharp as ever.
Ironic isn't it that the Louiville Lip who use to float like a butterfly and sting like a bee who with his clever predictions, his searing poetry, his quick wit and snappy retorts suffers from a disease that renders his FORTE useless.
