Who Is Lying About Iraq?
Commentary Magazine ^ | December 2005 | Norman Podhoretz

Posted on 11/10/2005 8:19:01 AM PST by nikos1121

Among the many distortions, misrepresentations, and outright falsifications that have emerged from the debate over Iraq, one in particular stands out above all others. This is the charge that George W. Bush misled us into an immoral and/or unnecessary war in Iraq by telling a series of lies that have now been definitively exposed.

What makes this charge so special is the amazing success it has enjoyed in getting itself established as a self-evident truth even though it has been refuted and discredited over and over again by evidence and argument alike. In this it resembles nothing so much as those animated cartoon characters who, after being flattened, blown up, or pushed over a cliff, always spring back to life with their bodies perfectly intact. Perhaps, like those cartoon characters, this allegation simply cannot be killed off, no matter what.

Nevertheless, I want to take one more shot at exposing it for the lie that it itself really is. Although doing so will require going over ground that I and many others have covered before, I hope that revisiting this well-trodden terrain may also serve to refresh memories that have grown dim, to clarify thoughts that have grown confused, and to revive outrage that has grown commensurately dulled.

and what are the chances of that happening ?
they truly have more than a thought disorder.

The Dems are the ones lying about the war. It is clear from the Senate Intelligence Report, the Lord Butler Report in Britain, the Duelfer (sp?) report, the Kay Report, numerous quotes from Democrats pre-war and pre-Bush presidency where they admitted the threat, numerous news reports from 2000 and before where it was regarded as common knowledge that Saddam was cooperating with Osama, etc and all of these news organizations conveniently forget their own reporting... The Liberals are lying about the war, not Bush.

Nick,
If it is indeed a duplicate post, all the better.

This is without a doubt one of the best commentaries on this sad state of affairs. I appreciate your posting it, I will forward this on to everyone I know.

A great article. I don't know any liberals who could read past paragraph two without slamming shut their brain-door.

This needs to be read and read again. Wilson should be in jail, but instead, he's feted and wined and dined all over D.C. and NY by dem/MSM movers and shakers.

This was a great post. I have seen this nonsense repeatedly in our local paper here in the People's Republic of Eugene, Oregon. It inspired me to send the following letter to the editor. If you can use it in any way, please feel free.

George Bush lied about weapons of mass destruction. I quote, “We have known for years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing WMD’s. Iraq’s search for WMD’s has proven impossible to deter and we should assume it will continue as long as Saddam is in power. He has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years, every significant UN resolution that demanded he disarm and destroy his chemical and biological weapons, and any nuclear capacity. The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. There is unmistakable evidence Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years. That is why we must be prepared to use force, if necessary, to disarm Saddam Hussein and eliminate Iraq’s WMD’s once and for all.”

The above quotes compile statements respectively by Ted Kennedy, Al Gore, Henry Waxman, Robert Byrd, Jay Rockefeller, and John Edwards. These quotes concerning WMD’s were uncontested points in 2002, which then formed the basis for further discussions. The legend persists instead that these and similar statements were talking points exclusively for George Bush. Contact your newspaper if you are interested in sources. Let us move the debate beyond this mythology.
