I don't see why criticism of Bush should be outlawed and frankly such a thought is contrary to free speech. The fact is that Bush's team has put out some boneheaded proposals and the President has done nothing to reign in spending, enforce the borders or manage the Supreme Court nomination process. The republican party has taken conservatives for granted and will likely suffer for it. Should I vote republican just to prevent a democrat getting into office when "RINOs" (whatever that means today) refuse to give up pet spending projects or support ANWAR? Free Republic is not the GWB cheer leading section.

AMEN!!! The most demoralizing thing that I can think of is the notion that FR should censure criticism of the President. I never saw such proposals on this site prior to Bush's election. The truth of the matter is that the number of conservatives who were critical of Bush was actually quite high back in 2000 and seemed to have dropped off after that.

You have to understand how the game is played.

In an election, your choice is not to choose the perfect candidate but the better candidate -- or run yourself, and see how popular your position is -- since you presumably claim to speak for others.

And that is the crime of today's mainstream media -- is that they are not asking us what we think -- but telling us what to think by their phony polls, bogus experts, and manipulation of the news and opinions. These abuses are not isolated incidents but is the heart and soul of contemporary mainstream media.

This media would like us dignifying their deceptions and accusations by arguing them as though they were established facts -- rather than ignoring them and tending to the real work and battles. It's the tactic used by the tabloid newspapers; they print these outrageous stories knowing that people with full lives can't spend all day defending themselves against every asshole opinion -- or their lives are controlled by the others, and every other.

If you've ever been successful at anything -- or been in public life, you'll find others eager to tear one down in every way they can imagine, as their personal vendetta, personal obsession, their own claim to fame. You can't cure all the mental illness in the world -- personally, even if you're the President.
