WASHINGTON -- At a time when he is under criminal investigation in the CIA leak case, Karl Rove stepped into the limelight Thursday night, praising failed Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers to an influential group of conservative lawyers.
"If you like every one of the 200 judges that we have sent forth to the U.S. Congress to be approved in the last three years, there hasn't been one of them who hasn't been researched, vetted, studied, analyzed or recommended by my friend Harriet Miers," the deputy White House chief of staff said in remarks to the Federalist Society.
Rove did not mention that Miers withdrew her nomination because of opposition from President Bush's conservative base.
In his 20-minute speech, Rove also took direct aim at four Democratic senators who have harshly criticized the White House in the CIA leak probe and have been staunch opponents of some of the Bush administration's judicial selections. The four are Sens. Charles Schumer of New York, Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, Richard Durbin of Illinois and Patrick Leahy of Vermont.
Rove suggested the four Democrats have met their match in the conservative agenda of the Federalist Society.
"Who would have thought that the powerful members of the world's most exclusive club would be so threatened by a movement of competent, principle-driven egghead lawyers?" Rove said to laughter.

That was fun, watching him make fun of them...
But, Yost is at it again in this article...he totally mischaracterized the Plame case...making it sound like Rove is guilty and it is just a matter of time before he is indicted...
He talks about the case as if it was PROVEN to have been an illegal "outing"...which it hasn't.
In fact, as a result of the investigation, we know that it was not an illegal outing. It is no more aledged or an opinion or a possibility.
If every person in Washington were investigated for two years with special prosecutors with grand jury subpeona powers - go ahead - pick a Democrat you think would stand the test - there would be a lot more than an aledged problem with statements made by someone else.
This is just typical bias, and repeating over and over any negative story concerning the administration. More work from the enemedia.
I love Rove. :-)
That's the type of talk we need more of, directed at people eminently deserving.
Nice gesture to Miers. No one wishes her ill, just wasn't right for the this position.
Amazing that she was largely responsible for the 200 great picks as judges. She knows her judges.
If Karl Rove was as evil and diabolical as the dems accuse him of being...do you think that he would have "let" these messes hang around the White House as long as they have??
See...the dems are used to the way the Clinton's got rid of the "trash"...they didn't let it hang around long enough to spread to them.
It looks like it is scheduled for rebroadcast on C-SPAN2 on Friday starting at 9:01 a.m. EST.
I'm gonna see it tomorrow evening when I get home from work.
12 paragraphs with 6 containing digs at Rove. Not a news piece but an editorial.
On the other hand, I was deeply mortified that the broadcast didn't start until 9:03 EST after I had told people 9:01.
