GOP Stayed Home in Calif. Vote

Two years ago, more than 70 percent of Inland California voters supported the recall of former Calif. Gov. Gray Davis – while majorities of voters also backed Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s election.

That same Republican bastion, which includes Riverside and San Bernardino counties, didn’t come through at the ballot box this week, party officials said Thursday.

In fact, voter turnout in those key counties was among the lowest in the state, according to a report in the Riverside Press-Enterprise.

Critical Riverside and San Bernardino counties are among the fastest-growing in the state – a region where the number of registered voters has increased by more than 260,000 since fall 2002. Republicans outnumbered Democrats there by more than 120,000, according to a tally last month.

In past elections, the Inland area was a cornerstone of GOP strategy, and the resounding failure of the governor’s propositions this past Tuesday has local Republicans worried about 2006, according to the Press-Enterprise. "When your own people don’t show up, you’ve got a heck of a problem,” said Professor Jack Pitney, who teaches government at Claremont McKenna College.

California Republican Party spokeswoman Karen Hanretty said officials will examine turnout in the Inland area. The party wants to know the particulars of the Republican vote - data that will become available when officials finish their canvass later this month.

Kevin Jeffries, chairman of the Riverside County Republican Party, concluded that it’s easier to rally voters around a candidate than around complicated ballot propositions, adding that only half as many volunteers helped get out the vote for Tuesday’s election as were mustered for last year’s presidential contest.

Just goes to show if you want to keep your conservative base voting for you don't move to the center. Reagan won in landslides with conservative and swing voter support.

They can start here at FR. A number of FReepers didn't vote, as evidenced on the voting live threads. Sad.

The Republican Party has moved hard left since Bush won the 2nd term with the right wing pulling hard to keep from getting Bushwacked.

The California Republican party chose a liberal bay area guy to run the party over a solid NoCal conservative two years ago.

The Republican party needs to change its ways. Here is the recipe for getting back on track.

1) Secure the borders, get rid of incentives for illegal aliens.
- Contract with the government of Mexico to take all of our Mexican prisoners. We can pay 1/3 of the cost of keeping them in California to Mexico and save 2/3.
- Create dis-incentives for illegal aliens and the businesses that hire them.
- Get rid of all benefits/health/school/etc for illegals.
- Fingerprint all illegals and tell them that if they get caught twice, they will be banned from ever becoming a citizen.
- Require English for citizenship.
- Get rid of the "Born in the USA" citizenship and change it to "Born LEGALLY in the USA" to prevent anchor children.

2) Reform the tax system with either a;
- Flat/Simple Income Tax
- Sales Tax
and amend the constitution to prevent cumulative taxes from exceeding a limit defined by 2/3 of Congress.

3) Get out of Iraq sucessfully.
- This does not mean walking away. It can be pulling our troops off the front lines and stationing them in the outer areas of Iraq where they can assist the Iraqis, but get the KIA and WIA stats off the front pages.

4) Get Osama. What the hell??? Why is this guy still running around? Offer the Pakistani's $100 million for his head on a stick and tell them you will cut $100 million if they don't provide it by the end of July 2006.

Great list. What the media seems to be missing when they report the low poll numbers for Bush is this: We are pissed because he is not being conservative enough. The country is NOT swinging to the left....we are reacting to getting slapped in the face after finally giving our party control of congress & the WH.

That's just the French-surrender-monkey attitude the Democrats hope for in Republicans.

Vote, then fight.

It sounds pretty stupid to me. Arnold had some important propositions, and if the "McClintock only" people stayed home, they deserve socialism.

They're useless and no better than democrats.

Can't spare 10 minutes at the most to vote absentee!

That is EXACTLY what my husband said to me this morning. And we've NEVER been polled, and they have our phone numbers. Do they use the same phone numbers over and over?

Heh. I guess that was too polite ;). How's this?

YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO COMPLAIN IF YOU CAN'T GET OFF YOUR BUTT AND VOTE.

I have been called for surveys & even answered on several occassions. These were just for local issues. I have never been called for national polls.
