Former New Orleans police chief will head up hotel security

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Eddie Compass, who resigned as the New Orleans police chief four weeks after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city, will work as a security consultant for a hotel group.

Compass said he had numerous job offerings before deciding to take the position with New Orleans Fine Hotels, a collection of 11 hotels in the city's historic districts.

Compass' resignation from the police department was unexpected, although the force had been wracked by desertions and disorganization in Katrina's aftermath.

As the city slipped into anarchy during the first few days after Katrina, the 1,700-member police department saw many officers desert their posts, and some were accused of joining in the looting that broke out. Two officers Compass described as friends committed suicide.

"I don't want to talk about it," Compass said Friday. "I'm not upset, not bitter. I'm just looking forward to a new challenge."

Compass refused to say why his departure was so abrupt. There had been speculation that Mayor C. Ray Nagin had pressured him to resign.

"I don't have any comment on any of that," Compass said.

Compass said he left the police department six weeks ago.

"I had a lot of comp time from Mardi Gras, things like that when I worked 12, 16 hour days," he said. "I don't get overtime, just comp time, so I used that up."

He did not receive what he called "drop time" — pay for sick leave and vacation leave not taken. Nor is he sure when he will get a pension.

New Orleans Fine Hotels

If this is what the owners of the above chain think of security, let the DUmmies be their only customers.

I think they were fired for abandoning their posts during Katrina.

Bush put it into the "Clinton Malfeasance" file.

They'll get to it Real Soon Now.

Paying for his connections. Always nice to have someone who knows where the bodies are burried (figuratively speaking of course).

Clowns like him need to be registered like sex offenders, he is nothing but a mobster, then again what have politicians become? Maybe it is better that he now has an honest job that is regulated by governing bodies that are better mobsters than he is.

I know the owner of these hotels. He is a no nonsense, no BS guy.

If anything untoward happened during Compass's time as PS, he would not have been hired.
