Santorum Critical Of Bush, War In Iraq

(AP) PHILADELPHIA Sen. Rick Santorum took a rare swing at President Bush, saying the war in Iraq has been less than optimal and that some blame for that lies with the White House.

Santorum, a conservative Republican and usually a strong Bush ally, said the unpopularity of the war should be shared between the White House and the media.

“Certainly, mistakes were made,” Santorum said of the war’s conduct. “But that’s a criticism you can make of every conflict.”

The comments, made after a Veterans Day speech at the Union League in Philadelphia on Friday, came at the same time the Pennsylvania senator stressed he wasn’t trying to distance himself from the president, who spoke moments earlier about 80 miles away at the Tobyhanna Army Depot.

Bush’s poll numbers are the lowest of any time during his presidency, in part due to the climbing death toll in Iraq. He is also blamed by some for the loss of the Virginia governor’s race, in which he appeared with Republican candidate Jerry Kilgore the day before the election. Kilgore lost.

Actually, it got me too when I first saw it.

The amazing thing is that just the I think the LSM can't get any more despicable, the prove me wrong.

I've lost respect for Santorum because of this.
Dr. Dobson had him on his program not too long
back praising his commitment to principles and
integrity.

Ha!

(And I'm a believer in Dr. Dobson's work.)

Yesterday, the print edition of the Inquirer had a story on the speech. It quoted Rick as saying that Americans have soured on the war in Iraq because they do not understand it as part of a long and necessary fight against "Islamic fascist forces bent on destroying democracy-and the White House is partially to blame for not articulating the stakes" ..."It's as if FDR were to define World War II as 'war on blitzkrieg' a military tactic". They also reported him saying that the conduct of the war was "less than optimal" and that "maybe some blame could be laid" at the White House". I never buy the Inquirer; the only reason I did yesterday was to see this story.

Santorum is going to have to put all transcripts of his press statements on line. He's going to have to make the rounds of talk shows and do everything he can to bypass the LSM.

Absolutely, he is not very critical at all...if anything, he is saying that the president should be tougher. Rick actually came out and called the terrorists "islamic fascists." Rick is on the right side of this argument, the AP just wishes he was going against Mr. Bush.

Now your buddy Richy has come out against Intelligent Design being taught in the classroom. That's a flip-flop. I guess the media messed that "f-ing" quote up also.

If that's the way Santorum backers talk, I am definitely not supporting him this time around. Last time I contributed to his campaign even though I don't live in Pa, but he has done some real lamebrained things lately, and it is not the Media's fault this time, it's his own doing.

Actually, yes they did. I don't trust that story any more than this story, which was thoroughly debunked in post #94.

"Why isn't anyone asking why the White House did not check with Senator Santorum before scheduling the President's address? Was Santorum just supposed to blow off a large veteran's gathering in Philadelphia to get another useless photo-op with the President? IMO, Santorum was speaking to people who will actually vote for him next year, and saying things that might actually help him in the election, not wasting his time sitting on a podium."

Good point. Wont convince the gripers, but its true.

I see. When he disses my president and is widely reported to be doing so because that was what he appeared to be doing, I should not make something of it. Likewise when he coddlesw Specter, who is entirely too secure as he pokes conservatives' eyes at the very moment we have all been waiting for--supreme court vacancies when we control the Senate. Do you want Santorun to feel that he is free to "move to the left" or "move to the center" in order to get re-elected OR do you want him to follow a more consistent line[?] which would most likely be better for him politically if he tirelessly expressed his positon. This half-hearted "moving left" is counter productive politically, despite the realist advisors who are apparently telling him otherwise.

Hope you are happpy with your senators' vote today on the Warner amendment. Santorum weakens America again. Don't you think he needs some back pressure from the right?
