poor baby girl.

Why, oh why, do people with problems such as these have child after child that they don't care for properly?

I can't imagine having alcohol in my system and breastfeeding. Some people just should not have children. How horrible.

I can understand how someone can become pregnant, living such a lifestyle, but why not give the children up for adoption.

There are so many couples out there who deeply desire to adopt. At least the baby will be wanted, provided for, and loved.

A 4-month-old girl died when her inebriated mother fell asleep passed out on top of her while breast-feeding

Sad.

My French-Canadian sister-in-law will have a glass of wine and breastfeed. Says it helps calm the baby down. All her kids are intelligent and well-mannered, BTW.

It's more efficient just to let the kid suck on a whiskey soaked towel.

Good God.

I was a breastfeeding peer counselor for over 5 years. The thing we used to tell moms who asked about alcohol and nursing, was that if they were too drunk to hold the baby, they were too drunk to nurse the baby. We also followed that with comments about standing, not passing out, etc etc.

In other words, sobriety. If you are sober, you can nurse. If you're drunk, don't nurse.

The weird thing though, from what I understand, is that once the mother is sober, any alcohol in the milk is also gone. Something to do with how the body flushes alcohol from the system.

*shrugs* I just didn't drink and nurse. But then I had twins, and nursing them sober was its own special challenge!

But gosh, that poor, poor baby. And that STUPID STUPID woman.

No issue here... parents "rights" are always better than the "state" becoming involved.

(sarcasm alert, for the clueless)

She'll be sober tomorrow (maybe), but they will still be French.

A glass of wine is different then having six double shots of liquor

Not if you also want the mom calmed down...

If you have a glass of wine and .05% blood alcohol your baby is getting a negligble amount.

It's the being DRUNK and smothering the child that's the problem.

It was not all that long ago we were telling breast feeding moms to have a glass of beer when they were nursing.

I can understand how someone can become pregnant, living such a lifestyle, but why not give the children up for adoption.

Among the most prominent of reasons why not: excessive alcohol intake impairs judgment.

Me, too. It's definitely a challenge nursing twins, especially at the same time! lol

I still wouldn't have drunk alcohol and nursed. I suppose a glass of wine wouldn't hurt but I just never took a chance. But kids sure can make you want to drink!

My husband and I remember one of our doctors, either the pediatrician or the ob/gyn, telling me to have a glass of wine before the late afternoon nursing - the "witching hour." It was supposed to help the milk let down and make me (and the baby?) calmer. I had four kids between 1983 and 1994, not that long ago.
