NHTSA decided in 1996 to make FARS data easier to obtain by using Internet technology. This FARS Web-Based Encyclopedia offers a more intuitive and powerful approach for retrieving fatal crash information.

This website allows multiple types of sorts for the information, enlightening! For instance in large truck accidents for 2004 (last year available) a total of 761 accidents with 4,006 other vehicle occupants and 423 non-motorists involved for a grand total of 5,190 DEATHS IN ONLY 761 LARGE TRUCK ACCIDENTS!

The numbers strike me as pretty low considering how many millions of cars are on the road at any given time, being driven by people who'd probably fail a walking-while-picking-their-nose test.

It is clear that the Infidel SUV's are seeking to destroy us! We must resist them, but torching them as they have in France! Since their "Intifada" of car burnings, the vehicular death totals in France have dramatically declined!

In the 50's, 60's and 70's the death figure a year was around 50,000 with a whole lot less cars. Then they started making cars that you steered rather than aimed. Thanks to Germany and Japan.

1) Large trucks are vehicles over 10,000 pounds. We're talking delivery truck or big rig, not SUV
2)Large trucks are 4% of all vehicles, and 8% of vehicle miles travelled. But they are associated with 12% of all traffic fatalities, that is disproportionately large. I guess that's not too surprising when you figure they're going to do more damage to whatever they hit than a typical vehicle.

We need to pull our cars out of the US now!
To: AmericanDave
What the table doesn't point out is that the rate of traffic deaths isn't distributed evenly throuought the day or among demographic groups. Teen agers and young adults are disproportionately represented. It is much more dangerous to drive after midnight especially on Friday or Saturday nights.

My reaction, too. That's less than 1,000 per state. I am surprised the figure is so low.

In the 50's, 60's and 70's the death figure a year was around 50,000 with a whole lot less cars. That's actually something we can chalk up, in large part, to Ralph Nader, of all people. Cars are much much safer today than they were just 20 years ago, and cars in the 50s were deathtraps.

2000 deaths in Iraq in 3 years.
Makes you think.
Need data on how many college students die in alcohol related death.
My wife doesn't want my son to go in the service because she is afraid he'll be killed.
But she wants him to go to college. He really doesn't have the maturity to succeed at college yet. I think college holds at least as much danger for him. I also think he needs the discipline that time in the military could teach him.

Puts a different perspective on the lost of lives during the Iraq war, doesn't it.
2,200 in 2-1/2 years, compared to 42,000 per year in traffic deaths.

Exactly. When will the roads be safe enough so that we can pull out, or pull over.

Over 42,000 traffic fatalaties per year in United States! It's a QUAGMIRE...we must withdraw our cars from the streets immediately!
It's all Bush's fault...he knew the roads weren't safe but he still hasn't called out the national guard to clear our roads of cars.
