WASHINGTON, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Support for building a 2,000-mile fence to separate the United States from Mexico is growing as new warnings of terrorist entry have been added to the threat.
This week, Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee introduced a bill calling for the steel and wire fence, and more than 20 other lawmakers have signed on to it, USA Today reported. Hunter is proposing a fence from San Diego to Brownsville, Texas.
"It's no longer just an immigration issue. It's now a national security issue," he said.
While the Homeland Security Department opposes building a fence on that scale, Secretary Michael Chertoff this fall waived environmental laws so that construction can continue on a 14-mile section of fence near San Diego that has helped border agents stem the flow of illegal migrants and drug runners to one-sixth of its previous level.
The Bush administration has also said a massive wall would be a waste of money, costing up to $8 billion.
Who's gonna build this fence and how effective will it be? Other than that, heck, let's get to it!
Why only a FENCE? We should have the Great Wall of America down there AND unmanned planes patroling it.
Good fences make good neighbors. That seems to sum it up IMHO.
My only question is how many volts?
Autocannon. Lots of Autocannon...
It's about damn time!
thought we already had a fence ........Great Wall of America sounds good to me
I bet we spend more than $8 billion a year on state/fed benefits for these people. How can it not save money.
Phalanx.
We could not pay the UN for a couple of years. Silly me, Bush wants the cheap labor for his big business cronies.
Speaking strictly for myself, I think it's a great idea. Let's get to building it.
They don't have a problem spending money on useless pork, so spend the money on this useful national security project, dammit!
fences schmences...its nothing interlocking fields of fire can't take care of with a whole lot less recurring maintenance expense (and grafitti)...i want to see a state governor document the amount of health care and education dollars diverted to treatment/education for illegals, then sue the federal governments of the US and mexico for reimbursement.
The wall and fence Israel built has been very effective. We should have built a double fence 15 years ago.
OK, so existing 14 mile fince is a proof of concept and it proves that it WORKS. How can Chertoff not want the fence built with results like that?
"It's no longer just an immigration issue. It's now a national security issue," he [Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif.] said. Hey Hunter, where ya been? This has been a national security issue for years.
If, when terrorists attack us again, it is proved they entered our country via our southern border, how much Hell do you think is gonna be raised?

Ever go to Mexico? I remember passing one of the Jail courtyards. There was a huge wall....with broken glass bottles cemented along the top of the wall. We can call it "Tequilla stops here".
Mexicans are review "Tunnel Making Equipment" as we speak and/or "Speed Boats".
I disagree with the administration. The "massive wall" would help a great deal. Now, what IS a waste of money is the amount Californians pay for illegals.
Build the wall.
Cost of illegal immigration in California estimated at nearly $9 billion
December 6, 2004
California's nearly 3 million illegal immigrants cost taxpayers nearly $9 billion each year, according to a new report released last week by the Federation for American Immigration Reform, a Washington, D.C.-based group that promotes stricter immigration policies.Educating the children of illegal immigrants is the largest cost, estimated at $7.7 billion each year, according to the report. Medical care for illegal immigrants and incarceration of those who have committed crimes are the next two largest expenses measured in the study, the author said.

a wall won't matter when the IRS is circumventing law by issuing workers who don't have SSNs tax ID numbers. 900,000 more issued last year. I am in Alabama and we have mexican sections all over the city.
What an incredibly stupid idea. A fence won't do anything to remove their incentives to flock here. The minute their sorry a$$es hit the north side of the Rio Grande they get health care food assistance and housing, not to mention stealing a free ejjucation (this would be an education if it weren't from a government school) for their innumerable ninos - all at taxpayer expense
What we really need is a disincentive program. Rather than making it easy for them, make it miserable, and they won't show up. Like proof of citizenship for ANY government assistance. Proof of citizenship for a job (oh wait - I had to provide MY birth certificate to my employer before I got the current gig, but they don't). Like maybe big fat fines for those convicted of working without the proper citizenship - I know it will never happen. King George II is too busy buying votes to ever do this. Like making any church that has an outreach program for illegals to lose its tax exempt status. Etc.
I say make the prisoners in the state prison go out there and build it. They're paying back their debt to society and we get to save gov't dollars! A 2-for-1 special!
Have they? I haven't seen that.
Those who either support or tolerate illegal immigration are generally big spenders. The border wall is the only government spending they ever seem to oppose.
Protect our borders and coastlines from all foreign invaders!
Support our Minutemen Patriots!
Be Ever Vigilant ~ Bump!
The Bush administration has also said a massive wall would be a waste of money, costing up to $8 billion.
No the waste was my vote for Geo Bush.
(Denny Crane: "I Don't Want To Socialize With A Pinko Liberal Democrat Commie.Say What You Like About Republicans. We Stick To Our Convictions. Even When We Know We're Dead Wrong.")
Name one other government "investment" that can turn a profit within two years.
Great Wall Ping!
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off this South Texas/Mexico ping list.
Here in Indiana, we use a lot of them Electric Fences, maybe that might work.
In other words a fraction of what illegal immigration costs us in ONE YEAR!
California taxpayers face a bill for 10 billion bucks every year to support illegal aliens. The Bush argument is moot.
BUILD A VERY HIGH WALL!
We are burning through $6 billion every month in Iraq. Getting $8 billion is not a problem.
Think of it as more money down the PaleSimian Rat Hole...and that it's part of a "Roadmap to Security"...
Maybe then you can back it...
Oh, I forgot...this is Jorge Arbusto...can't offend the Southern Masters...must have cheap lettuce!
Too much effort to actually ENFORCE EXISTING LAWS...much better to keep the illegals happy!
Want to help defray costs? Allow the American people to purchase 'dedication/memorial bricks.' For ten dollars a brick/concrete block, the builders include it in the wall with a 'personalized' message inscribed. Mine, for example, might say 'ESAD, Mexico'. Worth the ten bucks, as far as I am concerned.
Did they say that with a straight face? Pullease...
Or even, "Defend America from Invasion" bonds. They'd sell.
Even when these clowns are trying to appease fed-up constituents, they still don't get it.
It was, and never will be an "immigration issue". Immigration (ie: legal move to the US) has nothing to do with fences....it has to do with obeying the law.
IT'S AN INVASION ISSUE!!!
Duhhh....
Yeah.... by all means, lets make sure it's popular before we do something silly like fulfill one of our enumerated duties in that pesky Constitution!
(gag)
My only question is how many volts?
LOL, you dont understand Mexico. Every house would have a power cord plugged into our fence. Wouldnt be enough volts left to zap a fly.
1) I am in favor of the United States government securing America's citizens and believe the most immediate and effective method to accomplish this is by restricting the flow of illegal aliens into the U.S. by the construction of a continuous 24 ft high linear border barrier structure topped with razor wire and to reduce or end the attraction of felon employers by assessing them disabling fines and/or penalties. An additional benefit of such a linear border structure would be to restrict the movement of illegal drugs into the United States from Central America thereby reducing the annual federal expense of drug interdiction.
The GOP didn't address the pork barrel spending. If they had, funding a wall or fence would not be an issue.
Build the fence NOW!
I've got my own post hole diggers. You get us some 'bob'wire and I'll get my cousin to throw in some posts.
