The Italians are essentially sterile. The young Italians don't have any babies. They are just like moron Americans, wanting designer clothes, luxury cars, plasma screen TVs, vacation homes, etc, etc.

The work is now done by their equivalent of Mexicans or Central Americans: Algerians, Yugoslavians, Morrocans, Africans, etc. ... who are replacing the native population.

The same is going on all over Europe from Russia to Spain, The only exception: Ireland.

that 40 percent of Italian men between the age of 30 and 34 still live with their parents.

And are florists.

A consequence of the welfare state: the ones who do work are taxed to the point where they don't have enough income to support a family, unless the wife also works full time

The welfare state will continue until the number of productive middle-class taxpayers drops below a critical number. The resulting explosion will be very loud

With stagnating economic growth, over 10% unemployment and no positive prospects for improvement the outlook for stable families is bleak.
Why get married, have kids, then get eaten up by depth, stay solo and take life as is.

Maybe grown men live with their parents to help run the family-owned black market business. Anyone know if it's still true that much of the Italian economy is balck market?

There are multiple reasons: >>>>stagnant incomes, lack of affordable housing, education and employment....

YUP!

But those don’t address the cultural and psychological factors which have an even greater sway on this trend: the fact that it is socially OK for a grown man to live with his mother.<<<<<

Oh yes they do!!!!...see the first statement!!!

"60 Minutes" produced and televised a segment on this phenomenon a few years ago or maybe several years ago.

See "Death of the West": Where have all the children gone? Pat Buchanan nailed it almost 4 years ago.

I don't understand why they think guys living with their parents is causing the low birth rate. Amish families have high birth rates and they have three or four generations living in the same house.

My husband was raised by his Sicilian grandparents...his grandmother spoiled him rotten...if she had her way, he would never have left the house, would never have gotten a job, and would have nevered dared to get married unless she could pick out his wife for him...

His grandmother raised 4 of her own children, and never doted on them in this way...but when she raised my husband, she doted on him in every single way...he could never do any wrong, according to her, he was just the perfect child, according to her...

When he introduced me to her for the first time, her only remark was "well, shes pretty, ,but shes not a Sicilian"...in spite of that, we married, and went on to have our own boys...

But she never thought I could take care of her 'baby', as well as she did...she just had to learn that I could take care of her 'baby', just as well as she did, and even better...

But I know, if he had wanted to live his entire life, leaching off of his grandparents, ,they would have been all too glad to accomodate him...

They were talking about this twenty years ago. The pill did away with the stereotypical "large Italian family." Ironically, due to the early deaths of my maternal ancestors, you would have to go back several generations to find anyone with more than three kids. The Polish side of my family is another story...

Italy is, in many ways, a much healthier and open society than it was as recently as 30 years ago. Nevertheless, the fact that one walks the streets of Rome, Palermo, Naples, and Milan without seeing large crowds of children should give one pause.

Well exponential population growth cannot continue forever. At some point countries have to stabilize their populations. Why not now?

Germany and Italy are both reluctant to promote bigger families, because of their history during the Second World War. The Nazis and the Italian fascists were both big promoters of the birth rate.
