Despite losing everything, couple feeds Guardsmen

An old oak tree blown down by Hurricane Katrina destroyed the home of Jessie and Sherry Krummel. Looters took everything else.

But despite their misfortunes, the Krummels have been cooking dinner once a week . . . paying for much of the food out of their own pockets.

"There's no way you can describe what they've done," said [one] National Guardsman. "To see someone that's still got their spirit, it makes it all worthwhile."

The guardsman departed for home Saturday after one last feast.

Krummel and a handful of volunteers cooked a Creole Thanksgiving dinner for the troops, complete with nine fried turkeys injected with a butter marinade. There was homemade dirty rice, beans with ham hocks and fried green beans, too.

"Appreciate what y'all are doing for us," Krummel told a solider while dishing out a scoop of sweet and spicy corn.

. . .

Krummel, of suburban Marrero, estimated he's spent at least $8,000 cooking weekly dinners of red beans and rice, chili with andouille sausage, and boiled shrimp and potatoes. An outdoors store donated cooking equipment and Zatarain's, a maker of traditional Louisiana foods, gave him rice and spices.

Sharing Cajun and Creole food with relief workers has been one way Gulf Coast residents have shown their appreciation.

"They're here for us," Krummel said. "Why can't we do something for them?"

Chef Paul Prudhomme and his staff from K-Paul's Louisiana Kitchen have cooked about 30,000 meals for out-of-towners. "When you're good at something, you want to share it," he said.

Soldiers say the generosity has lifted their spirits.

"I feel honored and blessed these people do that," said Staff Sgt. George DeBono. "They're not asking for tips. They're not asking for anything." . . .

A good story after all the bad ones that have been reported by the MSM.

I am surprised at the MSM. According to them there are no good people in the world.

Hurray for Louisiana. Good people there.

"...turkeys injected with a butter marinade. There was homemade dirty rice, beans with ham hocks and fried green beans...red beans and rice, chili with andouille sausage, and boiled shrimp and potatoes...sweet and spicy corn..."

Mmmmmmm! If the Krummels gathered their recipes into a cookbook, I'd buy a copy. It'd help them get back on their feet and also help fund more dinners for the Guardsmen.

Terrific idea! Can any of our New Orleans area FReepers help to implement this idea?

Its a mitzvah. And God will bless them for their good deeds. They are the kind of people you'd want to watch your back. God bless 'em.

I'm in Houston right now, and I'm going back to New Orleans for Thanksgiving. My family is asking me to stop in Lafayette and pick up a few pounds of Boudin.

This is going to be one wicked yummy Thanksgiving.

Heh... tricky. These recipes vary literally from family to family. You'll have to talk to the Krummels themselves if you want their recipe.

Fried green beans - I know what I'm taking to Mom's for Thanksgiving dinner!

These folks need a cash donation from FReepers. Do we have an address to send checks and letters of thanks?

... nine fried turkeys injected with a butter marinade. There was homemade dirty rice, beans with ham hocks and fried green beans, too. ... sweet and spicy corn ... red beans and rice, chili with andouille sausage, and boiled shrimp and potatoes.

Even though I can cook quite well, I still believe the best way to a man's (and soldier's) heart is through his stomach. Any Cajun and SINGLE female FReepers out there available to correspond? ;-)

Great to be able to read this fine story, thanks to FreeRepublic. No, the MSM will not report a happy story about how great people can be and this is why the MSM is fast going down the toilet bowl, where they belong!

----Wonderful people that were victimized not once, but twice. That is what is really sad.I was going to ask where were the police ( the ones "borrowing" cadillacs to patrol in supposedly to prevent this type of thing), but then I remembered they shagged ass as soon as the going got tough and as soon as they got their free caddys because it's obvious they were not patrolling in them.

No, regrettably, I do not have an address for these folks ... just picked up the story off of WWLTV.com. They might be able to help.

Note in the article that Chef Paul Prudhomme has been doing yeoman's duty, as well ... and probably a lot of other restaurants in New Orleans that we have not heard about ... and Zatarain's [a wonderful N.O. business] has been providing rice, etc.

This was just such a positive story for Thanksgiving week that I thought it should be posted. Good people giving thanks for what they do have [in this case their lives, health and talents] and showing appreciation for what other good folks have done to help them. It does not get any better than that.

manwiththehands, with a handle like yours ... don't you think you just might scare a nice Cajun girl away? LOL

It was a good story about really good people out there. Thanks.

And yes, maybe my handle might scare off a few. But it's not like that! Just read my profile page. :-)

(note to self: if this happens again, change your handle)

Please do not change your handle! It suits you.

Congratulations on your new Viking Kittens in Training! Cats are singular creatures and will repay your kindness a hundredfold. There are two lovely kitties sleeping near me as I type this.

If you could find a good Cajun girl she would be even better than a cat! LOL

My kittens have already repaid my kindness ... except they are torturing my plants to death one leaf at a time. :-)

What is it with cats wanting to kill my plants?
