Respected Democratic congressman John Murtha, pictured here 18 November, called last
week for the 160,000 US troops in Iraq to be brought out, but Cheney said: 'It is a
dangerous illusion to suppose that another retreat by the civilized world would
satisfy the appetite of the terrorists and get them to leave us alone.'

That's the actual AFP caption.
Notice "Cheney" not only doesn't get a "respected" honorific or a distinguished title. He doesn't even get a first name.
If you're reading the caption outloud for any reason, make sure you vocalize "Cheney" with the appropriate disdain.

Count me among those who don't "respect" Murtha.
He is a grandstanding, lying POS who doesn't even have the courage to vote his so-called conscience.

I know it will probably never end, but I cant imagine what this country would accomplish if half of the country wasnt trying to undermine the efforts of hard working Americans in the military and those in the GOP.

When asked why he had changed his position from one year ago, when he opposed withdrawal, Murtha said, "Because we have made no progress in the last 12 months." He went on to say that on his last visit, the generals said "what they are supposed to say," but that he could tell they were discouraged.
So, now he is saying that the generals "misled" him on how things are going in Iraq. What is it with these people?

Should be "once-respected".

"Respected Democratic congressman John Murtha" was implicated in the
Abscam sting, in which FBI agents impersonating Arab businessmen offered bribes to political figures.
Murtha was never charged, but he was cited by the grand jury in 1980 as an unindicted co-conspirator.

Has Murtha explained why he voted AGAINST the resolution Friday night which mirrored his call for an immediate commencement of withdrawal?
I tuned in to Meet the Press Sunday expecting to hear an explanation, an excuse that the resolution was a misapplication of his original call. But it wasn't addressed. He reiterated his call for an immdiate withdrawal that would in his hopes be complete in six months time.
Has anyone heard a reasonable explanation as to why he voted against a resolution that answered the idea he continues to trumpet?

I keep telling you folks, it ain't about the war. It is about those several hundred thousand (or more) pages of Iraqi Defense Ministry documents currently being translated. Those docs scare the sh!t out of the Dems. They must defund this translation effort by defunding the war.

Murtha was targeted during AbScam and barely escaped indictment. He's also under an ethics investigation now. I guess the MSM considers him "respected" because of his ability to weasel out of indictments.
