Iraqi woman, children attacked; 17 arrested

BAGHDAD (Army News Service, Nov. 21, 2005.) – Iraqi Army and U.S. Army forces have made significant terrorist arrests, uncovered IED munitions and saved the lives of six Iraqi civilians attacked by terrorists in separate incidents.

An Iraqi woman shot by terrorists was saved by Iraqi Army and Task Force Baghdad Soldiers Nov. 19 in the Abu Ghraib area of western Baghdad.

After being hit in a drive-by shooting, the woman was treated by combat medics on the scene from 1st Squadron, 11th Cavalry Regiment, a unit from Fort Irwin, Calif., and immediately evacuated to a local hospital with the help of Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 6th Iraqi Division.

The woman was shot in the chest with an AK-47 assault rifle fired from a white sedan as it approached a military checkpoint. The woman is currently in stable condition in a local hospital.

5 children hurt in terrorist bomb attack

Five Iraqi children were hurt when terrorists detonated a roadside bomb in east Baghdad around 2:15 p.m. Nov. 20.

Iraqi Police (IP) reported that the improvised explosive device was most likely targeting an IP patrol but missed the target and detonated near a vehicle filled with children.

IPs and U.S. Soldiers from 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry secured the site and evacuated the wounded children to a local hospital for treatment.

Task Force Baghdad Soldiers detain 3 bomb suspects

Three suspected terrorists were detained in two separate incidents Nov. 19 by 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division operating in southwest Baghdad.

After striking an improvised explosive device, the Soldiers of C Company, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, conducted a hasty cordon and search of the area where they detained one local national positively identified to have been tampering with explosive material. The detainee also had multiple timers, detonators and initiators in his possession.

Later in the day, A Company, 2-101st Brigade Troops Battalion, in support of 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, discovered an IED consisting of a propane tank with a timer attached to it. The patrol secured and searched the area, detaining two individuals who were positively identified to be tampering with explosives.

Iraqi Soldiers capture 9 terrorists in east Baghdad

Iraqi Army Soldiers in east Baghdad launched operations against terrorists in Rusafa and Adhamiyah Nov 19-20.

Two suspected terrorists were detained on the first day of operations. They were thought to be managing insurgent activity in Baghdad.

The detained suspects also led the Iraqi Soldiers to other suspected terrorists. The follow-on mission to seize these men took place Nov 20 and six additional suspects were detained.

“The belief is these people engaged Iraqi and Coalition Forces with small-arms fire, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades,” said Capt. Chris Harris, an operations officer with Task Force Baghdad.

Another suspected terrorist was later captured on Nov. 20.

“The Iraqi Army pinpointed the location of a suspected high-level terrorist and seized him,” said Harris.

The Iraqi Army was responsible for all facets of this operation.

“The Soldiers are always ready for action and they have the training and firepower to back up their actions,” Harris said.

All nine of the detainees are currently in the custody of the Iraqi Army and will be processed by the Iraqi judicial system.

Search of cache turns up more weapons, munitions

After discovering a large weapons cache Nov. 16, Soldiers of 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division uncovered even more weapons buried beneath the original cache after a controlled detonation the next day.

The Soldiers of 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment began their search of this site Nov. 15 and the excavation continued through Nov. 18.

While exploiting the site Nov. 17, the Soldiers received information from an Iraqi citizen that there was going to be an attack by Anti-Iraqi Forces on the American forces securing the area.

At 10:30 a.m. Nov. 18, B Troop, 1/75th Cav. conducted a cordon and search of a house identified by the informant, resulting in the capture of five individuals suspected of being the AIF terrorists planning to attack the cache site.

Since the discovery of the original weapons cache, the Soldiers have uncovered an additional three 120-millimeter mortar rounds, 1,000 rounds of 7.62-millimeter ammunition, 60-millimeter mortar system, one 60-millimeter mortar and various homemade explosives.

Just wish more stories like this in the MSM. Maybe someone should forward it to Congressman Murtha. Contrary to what some say (and they know who they are), our troops continue to make significant progress in Iraq.

Our troops are training and utilizing the Iraqi Forces. When will many of the congress critters...get this. When will the MSM report the truth on what's taking place in Iraq? Lots more postives are taking place than we ever ever hear.

I've got family in the military and in Iraq...the postives out weigh the negatives in a huge way. We never hear this.

It's sad our national news media has come to this, where a negative story is always more important than ten positive ones. I guess it's up to us to get the good news out there.

But... I thought Murtha said, "Our military has done everything that has been asked of them, the U.S. can not accomplish anything further in Iraq militarily."

Good idea!

It just ticks me off that the Pentagon and White House don't "encourage" the MSM to print these stories: at least one Good-news-in-Iraq story above the fold each week, or you lose your press pass.

We use to post lots of articles here for our troops. DOD along with the other services i.e. Army, Marine, Air Force, Navy always have great articles. That's where we need to return and start posting the articles again.

Never - the truth is not their friend.

I'll tell you why the MSM don't like this sort of story, especially lately.

The Iraqi Army was responsible for all facets of this operation.

That's why. Kind of takes the "mire" out of "quagmire," now doesn't it?
