Murtha On The Record On Somalia
Captain's Quarters Blog ^ | 22 Nov 2005 | Captain Ed

Earlier today, I posted about John Murtha's stance on Somalia based on a Newsmax article. Various CQ readers have had an opportunity to research the subject further, and have discovered several references to the cut-and-run position Murtha urged on the Clinton adminstration -- advice it took, and helped to create the paper-tiger reputation that led to a decade of escalating attacks on the United States. These remarks come not from Newsmax but from Nexis searches of mainline press and from the Congressional Record itself.

Let me be clear on one point. In 1993, many people espoused the cut-and-run position from Somalia, among them Curt Weldon, one of the most vociferous hawks on Iraq. In fact, it does not stretch the imagination at all to call that position one of the more bipartisan efforts in the 103rd Congress. The difference is that in the eight years between our run from Somalia and 9/11, most of us learned the bitter lesson that retreating in the face of Islamists does not connote reasonableness and humanity, but cowardice and powerlessness. Combined with our spinelessness in Teheran, Beirut, and in caving into hostage demands from Hezbollah in the mid-80s, the pattern clearly gave Islamists the accurate depiction that Americans could not stand any sort of casualties in war and would quickly retire after the first bloody nose.

Murtha's words in Congressional Record Re: Somalia very much like those he used last week when calling on US to pull a "Murtha" in Iraq.

Seems Murtha may be an isolationist, not really a peacenik. You can't be an isolationist in this day and time. That way of thinking is suicide.

This guy is supposed to have credibility because of his military service. Didn't Benedict Arnold serve honorably in the US military?

I suspect she would say the same things Murtha said.

RE: "cut and run" and Somalia, critics, etc.

Let's not forget the disarray wrought by BJ and his worshipers.

From the first source I could find that matched my memory.

"In September General Powell asked Aspin to approve the request of the U.S. commander in Somalia for tanks and armored vehicles for his forces. Aspin turned down the request. Shortly thereafter Aideed's forces in Mogadishu killed 18 U.S. soldiers and wounded more than 75 in attacks that also resulted in the shooting down of three U.S. helicopters and the capture of one pilot. In the face of severe congressional criticism, Aspin admitted that in view of what had happened he had made a mistake, but stated that the request for armored equipment had been made within the context of delivering humanitarian aid to Somalia rather than protecting troops. In an appearance before a congressional committee to answer questions about the Somalia disaster, Aspin made an unfavorable impression and appeared weak in response to the detailed probing and criticism of his performance. The president publicly defended Aspin but made clear that the White House was not involved in the decision not to send armor reinforcements to Somalia. Several members of Congress called on Clinton to ask for Aspin's resignation."

There's a big difference between the CNN-inspired effort to feed the starving that BJ turned into a "nation building" effort. Remember the phrase "mission creep?"

Remember the SecDef telling the generals, "You don't need no stinkin' equipment."

Bin Laden was so impressed by the Somalia pull-out, he came to the conclusion that the U.S. would not fight.

</>Benedict Arnold, until his defection, was one of the most effective of Revolutionary War leaders...and really was a hero. Not sure whether it was influence of English wife or disillusionment with Washington (or both) which caused his treason. He was supposedly very unhappy that he had not received enough credit for his actions.

</>A Bronze Star certainly does not make Murtha a "Hero for life"....or even a "hero" at all!

Before I would even consider a word out of Murtha's mouth, from looking at pictures of Murtha, I wonder if he has a serious drinking problem? Alcohol has a serious tendency to impair one's judgment.

Well, yes! And, too, there are Bronze Stars -- and there are Bronze Stars!

We handed them out like cracker Jacks in SEA. All a guy had to do was stop picking his nose and keep his gun clean for 12 months to get one. Lost all legitimacy.

Let's take a close look at this buffoon's record in his tour(s) in country to see if he really did any heavy lifting.

As far as getting to be an 0-6 in the Reserves: A joke. All Murtha had to really do was press the right flesh; keep his nose reasonably clean; and refrain from patting his superior's wife's butt at the cocktail parties at the O'Club. True to the mark -- I kid you not.

Murtha should be called for what he really is: A disgrace to the uniform; and to his constituents.
