FAT people will no longer be given hip and knee replacements on the NHS in East Suffolk. GPs and consultants have agreed not to refer anyone classed as obese to a specialist until they have lost weight to help to save the areas primary care trusts £47.9 million.
A team of GPs and senior consultants from Ipswich Hospital spent nine months investigating ways to address the trusts financial problems and drew up a list of criteria that must be met before treatment for conditions such as varicose veins and glue ear.
The team agreed that patients with a body mass index of 30 or more recognised by the World Health Or- ganisation as obese should not be referred to surgeons for hip and knee replacements.
In Britain, a fifth of men and a quarter of women are estimated to be obese. A 5ft 10in man weighing 15st 3lb and a 5ft 3in woman weighing 12st 7lb would be classed as obese by this measure.
Dr Brian Keeble, the Director of Public Health for Ipswich PCT and the leader of the team that devised the guidlines, said: Patients who are overweight and obese do worse after operations. Lighter people tend to do better in terms of hip replacements not failing.
Next they won't treat ugly people, but they will always treat stupid people.
This is an outrage. They are rationing medical care.
They will just get scooters like they do in the US.
So they are no longer providing medical care for disorders that are caused by unhealthy lifestyles.
Okay. When are they going to stop providing medications to those who get AIDS and other venereal diseases?
Ohhhhh...that would be "bad" and "mean-spirited," wouldn't it? Riiiiiight.
Hey, they gotta cut corners to pay for all the drug addicts and AIDS-infected gays somehow!
What is that? 153lbs. and 127 lbs.? So unless your skinny as a rail, you won't get anything.
OK, I had to look up "glue ear":

5ft 10in man weighing 15st 3lb --- 258 lbs
a stone is 14 pounds, not 10
I know a woman in Canada who has leukemia.
Want to know how the health care system is treating her?
..They gave her a companion dog and some pills.
Guess that leaves Hillary......nah, too easy.

Do you mean to tell us that we can build things like this, but we can't build a heavy-duty knee?!?!
What? Please explain!
After conversion, I noticed that this is discrimination against men, in addition to discrimination against overweight people.
5ft 10in man weighing 15st 3lb -- 258 lbs
and a 5ft 3in woman weighing 12st 7lb -- 211 lbs.
Isn't a 211 lb woman who is only 5 ft 3 in more overweight, than a 5 ft 10 in man, who weighs 258 lbs?
The whole thing is totally preposterous.
Let the fat people just suffer and die.
What is next?! Just think how much money they can save, if they just kill all the disabled people, as Hitler tried to do.
"a stone is 14 pounds, not 10"
I went to a conversion site, where it said it's 17.
But if it's only 14, that means even moderately overweight people don't get medical care.
" then they need to get off the sofa and quit spooning off the rest of us. "
And how do you know that the "fat person" is not the one who is paying the most in taxes and isn't getting anything out of the medical care?
a stone is 14 pounds.
The 5'10" man = 213 pounds
5'3" woman = 175 pounds
Sweet mother of pearl, whiskey tango foxtrot is that? Surely you can't sneak the blade for one of those things out of the Metheun Home Depot.
Is that real?
and a 5ft 3in woman weighing 12st 7lb -- 211 lbs.
1 stone = 14 pounds
15st 3lb = 213 lb
12 st 7 lb = 175 lb.
I'd say I would agree, as long as the person had a medical condition that caused the "mega stone" condition. As opposed to those that weighed "mega stones" because of McDonalds.
Your statement needs to be modified a bit though....
but they will always treat stupid liberal minded people.
I just put a real name on the common disease we all know.
LVM
Socialized medicine.......toe the ling or up yours.
Actually, I come up with 213 lbs. One stone is approx. 6.35 kg or 14 pounds.
I can't get too specific but she lives in a remote area. Apparently there's a logistics problem? She's in her 50's or 60's so I have no idea if that's a factor as well.
But they did manage to get far enough to deliver the dog...
Starting to not treat people, because their condition is "all their fault" sets a dangerous precedent.
They shouldn't treat people who get injured in an accident, which was their fault, they shouldn't treat people who slip in a bathtub, because they should have put in a rubber mat, they shouldn't treat people with cancer, because they probably ate too many processed food, they should have known better, and so on.
Why not just kill all disabled people too -- wait, we are already doing that (Terry Schiavo).
He who pays...gets to decide everything else. Simple as that.
Which is why we should all be grateful for the choices we have, even expensive ones.
So an overweight taxpayer will be denied a new hip, but a skinny welfare mooch won't?
What is that thing? A dredger?
But the point is that many of these people who aren't getting the care are exactly the ones who may be paying huge taxes. The government takes the money away, that doesn't give them the right to not treat the very people they take the money away from.
yes. Weight is relevant, taxpayer/welfare mooch status isn't.
"So an overweight taxpayer will be denied a new hip, but a skinny welfare mooch won't?"
===
BINGO! Exactly.
It's worse in Canada. The hospitals in NY on the border of Ontario-NY are full of full pay Canadian patients doing their surgeries...the ones that take months or even years to have done due to rationing in Canada.

Socialized Medicine = Rationing every single time. They then say they are proud that they spend a lower percentage of GNP on health care compared to the US! No thanks!
the knee we can build, it's the human parts it's attached to that don't hold up...
How many times have we warned people that someone would be next after the users of tobacco products???????
But they chose to not listen to us and now everyone is outraged.
That's not politically correct, they couldn't print that here. Imagine trying to say in the USA that women are fatter than men in a blanket statement.
Gross fatness nationwide must be a sign of of a good economy combined with TOO much welfare.
I'm putting that on my amazon.com "wish list"
You gotta read some Thomas Sowell articles explaining how rationing, shortages, and quality deterioration are the inevitable result of price controls in socialized medicine.
This is insane.
Logic has no business in the field of medicine.....
But yah you'd sure think they could do that wouldn't you ?
I'm sure you've seen it... But just in case... See post #35.
Exactly. Do you find this surprising?
Socialized medicine is anything but. It is more elitist, less fair and downright barbaric sometimes.
I guarantee you that the Queen and the Lords and the Ladies all get the care they want, when they need it without any restrictions. In fact, I bet the Queen Mother weighed more than the limit, but if she needed a hip replacement, she'd get it in an instant.
My point is basically that socialized medicine is no fairer, or better for the poor and those in poor health than our system. All this does is force you to be part of one "insurance" company run by the government.
If there is one thing worse than competing insurance companies, it would be a single insurance company that takes your money by force. If you get mad, there really isn't anything you can do about it.
LOL
I think we're on the same page, just talking over each other.
Sorry! I HATE socialized medicine and get really ticked off when people talk about free health care.
Glad to see London take the first leap with this. Or was it Amsterdam? We could start saving a ton of money in health care if we would do this ourselves.
Of course, first to go would be the illegals. No reason to treat them.
Then the elderly - they certainly don't deserve it. Sucked-up too much already.
And let's not even go near cripples and the retarded. Can't even believe we send the retarded to school.
Terminal illnesses should be next. AIDS shouldn't even be tolerated. Not a penny for treatment. Gosh, the money saved there in a year would heat NYC for a decade. Heart disease - what a waste. Easy to knock-off too. Nobody would know.
Diabetes? Dumbass. No meds for you!
Parkinsons, Lou Gehrig's, cancer, Alzheimers! There's a decade wasted in a nursing home! Sexually Transmitted Diseases! OMG! Let syphillis take its course. Herpes, chlamydia, cervical cancer as a result of STDs - sorry you brought it on yourself. We'll make your last days comfortable with some medical pot.
These types of boards are great! I'd gladly serve on one to make sure there was healthcare available for the rest of us!
