FYI the USS Merrimac was a steam-and-sail driven wooden Union frigate. Having run aground, she was burned to the waterline and sank.
The Rebs raised the hulk, rebuilt the engines, and roofed it over with boiler plate and railroad rails. The new ship was christened CSS Virginia.
Also, some of the new designs sit very low in the water, similar to the USS Monitor and her descendants.
Yeah, I've noticed the similarities in design. The same slope that deflects solid armor-piercing shot also reflects radar waves away from the source.
The same faceted appearance is present in WWII tanks like Germany's Panther and King Tiger and the Soviet Union's T-34 series tanks.
