Since his surprise call last Thursday to withdraw American troops from Iraq, the media have been speaking nothing but high praise for Rep. John Murtha (D-Penn). Yet, the press haven’t always been so fond of the congressman, and their recent love affair with Mr. Murtha is totally ignoring their past depictions of him as being “a leading pork-barrel politician” who is often in the middle of a great deal of questionable spending related to defense contracts.

In fact, many of the headlines Murtha made in the ’90s were specifically connected to projects that he pushed through the House that largely benefited his home district in the state of Pennsylvania. His “earmarking” was so legendary that Roll Call’s Mary Jacoby stated in a February 24, 1994 article that it might have prevented him from becoming the chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations:

We all know here at Free Repub that the MSM loves anyone that is a useful idiot for their cause. Today their primary cause is to take out the Bush administration in any manner that is necessary, even if it means "loving" a hawk Rep of the House. He is serving their purpose today. Tomorrow is another matter and I am sure the MSM can find some more useful idiots. This is so simple for anyone that wants to see through it all - the MSM is a puppet of the George Soros and Michael Moores of the world. Not all the money funding this take down is from originating from within the US.

Murtha is not a "hawk". He just feeds off of the defense contract trough. He has no faith in or concern for the military.

That's correct he's not a hawk. He's a Demo-crhawk. Pronounced DEMO-CROCK. Everything he's does that's concerned with National Defense is tied into the pork network dynasty he has set up in Pennsylvania. Admirals and Generals, Secretarys of the Armed Forces all have to kiss his ring finger and make darned sure the bacon flows to PA or else the equipment they need to do the mission will get held up by the FAT CAT. That's how Washington Works!

If we're going to criticize congressmen and senators for being addicted to pork then there will be a more Republicans on that list than Democrats. And if we're going to criticize those who consider the defense buget as welfare for their state and district then Murtha doesn't hold a candle to Senators like Lott and Stevens.
