Assaults on Arizona Border Agents Increase

PHOENIX (AP) -- U.S. Border Patrol agents working the Arizona-Mexico border were victims of twice as many attacks this past fiscal year compared with the previous year, officials say.

The Border Patrol's Yuma and Tucson sectors recorded 365 assaults on agents between Oct. 1, 2004, and Sept. 30, 2005, up from 179 attacks reported for the same time period the year before, officials told The Arizona Republic.

Nationwide, agents were assaulted 687 times, up from 349 a year earlier.

Officials say the growing number of attacks reflects the increased influence of criminal gangs and the profits they can make smuggling migrants across the border.

Agents' vehicles are protected against rocks, the most common threat, and the Yuma sector has the first vehicle deployed along the border that can withstand gunfire. There were 45 shooting incidents recorded during the last fiscal year along the Arizona border, up from 15 the previous year.

We're building a war in the same way we built our terror war, by choosing to ignore it.

Excellent comment...and likely not far from the truth.

That is such a common sense answer. It is no wonder the elites in Washington can't seem to come up with it.

The elites in Washington enjoy their European style, air inflated, testicles. Brass testicles are such an uncomfortable weight because it tends to make the elite man a patriotic man. The air models fit much better with their style of repeating each others politically correct empty speeches.

We will soon find out. President Bush will be in AZ next week to see the border situation for himself.

President Bush will be in AZ next week to see the border situation for himself.

Not really...he's giving a speech at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson to tout his view on immigration reform, then he travels to Phoenix to support Senator Jon Kyl at a fund-raising dinner.

I doubt seriously that he's going to have any time to actually see what's going on down here...unless they drive past a Home Depot or Circle K at 7AM!!

This article misses an important point made by the report. That missing item was reported in the Sierra Vista (AZ) Herald this AM.

Agents nationwide were assaulted 687 times, with all but one occurring on the border with Mexico.

Keep that little nugget in mind next time someone comes on a thread and tries to tell us that we need to beef up security along the Canadian border...

President Bush will be in AZ next week to see the border situation for himself.

The last time he was in Tucson, he took a drive up Mt. Lemmon (hardly any illegals up there) with RINO Kolbe who filled his ear about how we all love illegal aliens. Right after that, Bush came back and started trying to ram "guest worker" programs down our throats.

Oh...what I read, which of course I can't find right now, indicated he would be inspecting the borders. Sorry.

President Bush will be in AZ next week to see the border situation for himself.

And just how close to the actual border will he get?

Oh, it's no problem - it's just we got so burned last time he was here. I wish he'd go down to the actual border - too bad HiJinx can't be his tour guide!
