As the old British saying goes: God protects drunks, babies, and the United States of America-

It's actually a Prussian saying from Bismarck.

There is a Providence that protects idiots, drunkards, children and the United States of America. - Otto von Bismarck

He seems to be a man of many faces that is for sure. Guess that goes well with the beltway gang.

. . Rep. Jack Murtha, who undermined troop morale and encouraged al Qaida last week . .

Now, Carl, I've never considered NewsMax an inpartial source, or even "fair and balanced," but aren't you jumping to contusions here?

A responsible journalist would preface that with something like "whose statements of last week are claimed to have undermined . ." or, better yet, "who Republicans claim" or, even better . . NAME NAMES!!

Until such time as morale meters are installed with every unit of the armed forces in Iraq, there can be no valid assessment as to whether a congressman's speech -- or a President's or a Pope's, for that matter -- gave the troops a boost or a downer.

As for Al Qaida, let them speak for themselves. Have they even responded?

Nobody called anybody a Michael Moore. Here's what the Press Secretary said: "Congressman Murtha is a respected veteran and politician who has a record of supporting a strong America. So it is baffling that he is endorsing the policy positions of Michael Moore and the extreme liberal wing of the Democratic party."

Absolutely, just as I do not believe that the Marine who spoke to Congresswoman Schmidt meant to say that Murtha was a coward (rather that Murtha, as a former Marine, should reconsider his "cut and run" position). The problem is that the Democrats, by putting Murtha out as their stalking horse, were trying to bait the Republicans into either praising Murtha's "patriotism" and accepting his "right" to express his opinion (which they ultimately did), or into making statements which could be (mis) construed as "left-handed" or "back door" attempts to insult a gallant veteran. IMO it's more likely than not that Powell actually read the Scott McClellan statement you quoted, so I have to believe that Powell is "assuming" that while the statement clearly does not call Murtha "a Michael Moore", or does anything but praise Murtha's patriotism, that it was "intended" to subliminally "morph" Murtha into Michael Moore by the rhetorical device of using their names in the same statement. Cynical and deliberately obtuse, I know, but that's how the Chris Matthews of the world rationalize "abridging" the actual statements of Administration figures (e.g. changing "British Intelligence reports" into "Bush said Saddam was buying yellowcake in Niger").

"We're not facing a world war anymore," Powell told the Post. "We have pretty much convinced the world that democracy is a better system than communism or fascism or totalitarianism."

I guess he's been asleep since 1983 and the attack on the Marines in Lebanon. There is a group of people who are not convinced of the virtues of Democracy, and they're willing to strap on explosives and blow themselves up in order to fight it.

Former Secretrary of State COLIN POWELL is not alone in his attacks on the BUSH White House. His former Speech Writer JOE GALLOWAY has more to say in some of his latest Knight-Ridder columns:

Joe continues to carry water for leftists by insisting that Bush justified Operation Iraqi Freedom solely on the basis of a threat of WMDs. Allow me to refresh Joe's mind on the other justifications cited by Bush at the time.

President's Remarks at the United Nations General Assembly

The dictator of Iraq and his weapons of mass destruction are a threat to the security of free nations. He is a danger to his neighbors. He's a sponsor of terrorism. He's an obstacle to progress in the Middle East. For decades he has been the cruel, cruel oppressor of the Iraq people.

If the Iraqi regime wishes peace, it will immediately and unconditionally forswear, disclose, and remove or destroy all weapons of mass destruction, long-range missiles, and all related material.

If the Iraqi regime wishes peace, it will immediately end all support for terrorism and act to suppress it, as all states are required to do by U.N. Security Council resolutions.

If the Iraqi regime wishes peace, it will cease persecution of its civilian population, including Shi'a, Sunnis, Kurds, Turkomans, and others, again as required by Security Council resolutions.

If the Iraqi regime wishes peace, it will release or account for all Gulf War personnel whose fate is still unknown. It will return the remains of any who are deceased, return stolen property, accept liability for losses resulting from the invasion of Kuwait, and fully cooperate with international efforts to resolve these issues, as required by Security Council resolutions.

If the Iraqi regime wishes peace, it will immediately end all illicit trade outside the oil-for-food program. It will accept U.N. administration of funds from that program, to ensure that the money is used fairly and promptly for the benefit of the Iraqi people.

"However, we need to realize the ENEMEDIA spins everything and distorts everything to accomplish it's own agenda, so be careful about reacting to any quote written or reported in the media."

WISE WORDS!

Reading through this thread it is clear that "cut and run" Murtha was not attacked by the White House, and Congresswoman Jean Schmidt did not attack him either! I recently saw a tape of her reading her statement in Congress to Murtha and she said NOTHING inappropriate. She did not call him a coward!!!

Then Schmidt should not have asked that her comments to deleted from the record!!!

"The attempts by the Democrats to make this into a personal attack show their utter stupidity and dishonesty."

And given more spin-weight by Schmidt's request to delete her comments re: the quote of the Marine Motto.

"I find it interesting that when a former Marine, who happens to be a Democrat, is questioned for his outrageous comments, those questioning him are maligned and ridiculed.Isn't funny how the anti-military Democrats love to hide behind their "war hero's" when it suits them?"

"Funny" that Democrats are fanatics and fascistic bullies!

I did not take notice of the source. You are absolutely correct about NewsMax. I always take NM with a grain of salt when I know it is NM. But Powell in the past has been too liberal for me, and that is why these remarks did not invoke a need to check the source.

Bush made a big mistake when he appointed Powell as Sec'y. of State in his first administration. He did it for political reasons not ideology. Powell showed he was unable to bring the State Dep't. in line with the administration and never seemed to be completely unboard with Bush. Good riddance to Mr.Powell.

"We're not facing a world war anymore," Powell told the Post. "We have pretty much convinced the world that democracy is a better system than communism or fascism or totalitarianism."

I like Powell most of the time, but that one statement shows why we are blessed not to have him on the team anymore.

I'm tired of Powell. What has he contributed the last 10 years? Just worried about his "legacy" in the Washington press circles.

You speak the truth.

When Murtha speaks surrender, he needs to be called on it.

I don't remember the Dems or Powell crying about the attacks on Dole when he was running for Pres. No one said his words were all to be accepted because of his heroic service did they?

I'm so sick of these RINO's. I wish they would just go to the Dems side of the isle so we can target and beat them as well.
