An angry former Secretary of State Colin Powell is blasting the Bush White House for attacking Rep. Jack Murtha, who undermined troop morale and encouraged al Qaida last week with his call for an immediate U.S. pullout from Iraq.
"To attack him the way he was attacked, accusing him of being a Michael Moore, was disgraceful and was not worthy," a Powell told the New York Post's Deborah Orin, who described him as "livid."
"Jack Murtha is great friend of mine," Powell declared. "He's a great patriot.
"I don't agree with his position," the former top Bush diplomat said. "But he has started a debate which is a good debate to have as to how long we should be there."
Hours after Murtha called for an immediate pullout last Thursday, White House press secretary Scott McClellan compared him to Michael Moore. Two days later, however, both President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney went out of their way to describe Murtha as "honorable."
Still, Powell focused instead on the earlier remark, and said nothing about the olive branch offered by Bush and Cheney.
The one-time chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff also suggested that the war on terror wasn't quite as serious as other challenges the U.S. has faced.
"We're not facing a world war anymore," Powell told the Post. "We have pretty much convinced the world that democracy is a better system than communism or fascism or totalitarianism."
You're right.
Powell is not real bright. It's always always about him. He wants the press to love him in the future when they write about his career.
And frankly, the Marines in Iraq are being used in roles which in many respects fail to utilize them in the traditional roles for which they were trained. You do not need an elite amphibious force to patrol a desert area. That they are brave, and trained to obey orders without flinching is to the Marines' credit. The present usage, however, is not necessarily to the credit of the Federal Government and the Defense Department, and a reluctance to fully explore our options and the rationale for certain decisions is not patriotism but "pig headedness." It does not protect the Marines, but the civilian office holders, who make the final decisions.
Let's have the debate, while we honor Marine bravery and skill.
"I once read that Bush Sr. picked Powell over something like 3000 higher rated personnel for Chairman of the Joint Chiefs (It might have been 300 but I think 3000 is right).
Bush Jr. is now reaping what Bush Sr. has sown in the name of PC."
Bush Jr. is NOT "reaping what Bush Sr. has sown". Bush Jr. is reaping what he himself has sown. Nobody forced Bush Jr. to pick Powell as his Secy of State. If Powell didn't have the Department of State in his resume, he'd be just another retired general & nobody would be headlining his views.
She's supposedly a preacher's kid but she apparently hasn't read the part about God's covenant lands and not dividing Jerusalem. This bothers me more than anything else anyone's done so far. When we touch Israel, we can expect bad things to happen here in America. President Bush should also know better. Argghhh. Well, whatever is done is done. All we can do is pray and hope God doesn't blow us off the planet. Ever wonder if Katrina was payment for running the jews out of the Gaza strip? I've read stuff about that. Run the jews out, and we'll get run out in one way or another. We need to be very careful where Israel is concerned.
No, just showing his true colors.
Did he really say that? That Murtha was comparable to M. Moore? It just doesn't sound like Scott.
Geez, is neutering mandatory to get a State Dept. job these days?
I always wondered why he was called "Colon" instead of "Colin"
Thanks! I wasn't sure WHAT you were going to say at first. Yes, God is in control and perhaps this is all going to lead to the existing endtime prophecies. All we can do is wait and pray. Love, M
