What are these people thinking? "Here's our daughter, boys ... free sex, and you don't have to be bothered with condoms, because we've put her on birth control for you!"

Yeah, and they think they're doing the "caring" and "concerned" thing!! Her parents are idiots, and now they want to profit from their idiocy over their poor daughter's dead body.

A friend of mine I've mentioned to you -- a doctor at a Catholic hospital -- has actually had a mother of a 14-year-old girl ask her to write her daughter a new prescription for BC pills. (I think my friend was too stuned to think of a properly tart reply, besides, "Uh, no, we don't do that here.")

It's unfortunately not uncommon. Parents are too lazy to supervise, too spineless to understand the difference between "parent" and "buddy", and just want to make sure their daughter doesn't come home pregnant so they don't have another kid to raise.

My mind is boggled by this. I just can't imagine parents doing something like this.

Parents are too lazy to supervise, too spineless to understand the difference between "parent" and "buddy"

It's true that a 14-year-old girl's snits and tantrums can be pretty disagreeable. (Make sure you have earplugs in, before you tell one to wash the dishes.) No, seriously, as someone said up the thread, a child that age is not independent, and almost can't be sleeping around unless her parents are making the opportunity for her.

and just want to make sure their daughter doesn't come home pregnant so they don't have another kid to raise.

And they've never heard of adoption, of course.

You're right. The message to this teenager was probably that pregnancy was the worst thing that could happen. (I'm guessing) Otherwise, with a message of life-threatening diseases, psychological effects of pre-marital sex, etc, the only choice could have been abstinence. Not to mention self respect and personal values... 14. It's sad.

My daughter is 11. I pray that her kids-do-stupid-things moments wont jeopardize her life or health. It's a minefield for our kids and they shouldn't be left to navigate it alone. I see many mothers who want to be their children's friends. Maybe at 18+ that could work, but being the parent takes strength that, sadly, some mothers don't have.
