TEHRAN, Nov 27 (Reuters) - At least seven people have been killed and many more injured in an Iranian earthquake that badly damaged villages on the Gulf island of Qeshm, officials and state television said on Sunday.
Iran's official news agency IRNA said the quake with a magnitude of 5.9 shook southern Iran and said the main hospital on Qeshm was full of wounded people.
"The hospital is full of wounded and those accompanying them. The hospital lacks basic facilities," an IRNA bulletin read.
State media said there have been three aftershocks, that marketplaces in the island's capital Qeshm City were shaken to the ground and that the villages of Tonban, Gavarzin and Khaledi have been badly hit.
Qeshm is the biggest island in the Gulf and a much-loved tourist spot in southern Hormuzgan province with a population of about 120,000 people and has protected sea turtles.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was of 6.1 magnitude, and placed it some 58 km (36 miles) southwest of Bandar Abbas at 1022 GMT.
