French tried to blame Britain for sinking Greenpeace flagship

The French Government tried to blame the 1985 sinking of the Greenpeace ship the Rainbow Warrior on MI6, according to official documents released under the Freedom of Information Act.

The campaign of “misinformation and smears” — suggesting that MI6 bombed the ship in New Zealand and framed French secret agents, or that MI6 knew in advance of the French mission — infuriated Margaret Thatcher’s Government. Malcolm Rifkind, then a Foreign Office minister, told British diplomats in Paris to demand an end to the stories in the media, but they continued to appear.

Sir John Fretwell, the British Ambassador in Paris, wrote of French officials’ “desperate attempts to find answers which will somehow satisfy public opinion while keeping the president [François Mitterrand] above the mêlée”.

Sir Geoffrey Howe, the Foreign Secretary, said he was “disturbed” that stories still appeared after he complained to his French counterpart.

Even after all these years I still wonder... can you imagine if it was the U.S. that had sunk a Greenpeace ship? Can you imagine how the rest of the world would have called us Nazis and worse and how it would have become "Exhibit A" for years to come to prove how evil America is?

Between lying and surrendering the French are becoming a parody of themselves.

I didn't read the entire article. They ramble for pages.

What I discern from this is that, IF I were FDR in 1942, I'd have supported and defended the Brits and let the European mainland... (I can't say it here).

When I was in Belgium about 10 years ago when Newt was putting together his "Contract For America," I had a project team of about thirty people working for me. The French spoke up one night in Antwerpen (yes, that is the way it is spelled in Belgium) criticizing America.

After the French tirades were finished, I asked a question.

I said that there were many British and Americans on this project.

Pregnant pause ensued before my question and subsequent statement...

Madame, do you speak French?

Her response, well of course.

My response, "Why not German?"

The flat-chested, pompus bitch sat down and lit a cigarette.

Then I called over the wine maitre de and asked him to serve Aussie or American wine for the rest of the evening.

The Belian PM on the Seagrams project thanked me profusely for nailing the arrogance of the French. All of the Euro's on the project could not put up with the French arrogance.

I could go on for days with my experiences in Europe, but JimRob would have to put another gig on his server.

Cheers

This is the one thing I can think of that the French ever did right.

The one act of courage the French have shown since Waterloo, and they try to "blame" it on the English!

It must not be a coincidence that "feckless" comes before "France" in the dictionary.

I find it hard to believe that the French military would try to hide their greatest and most recent victory! Over Greenpeace!
