I mean, once I hit town I would be pounding pavement looking for work. Which is polar opposite of the majority of the people in those hotels.

Ok, Nov. 22 with an extension to Jan. 7 is workable (to me).

The cutoff was rather sudden
Yes, but did they expect it to last forever? How much did the ones complaining do to help themselves in preparation for the cutoff?

All of you who have religously paid your child support and you mothers who actually know who fathered your kids should appreciate the irony in this story. Hey, we breed 'em you feed 'em is more than a rap slogan. Its a way of life.

"As of December 1, if you choose to remain in the hotel, you will be responsible for paying the bill with funds you have in hand, including any funds that FEMA has already provided to you," read the notice from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to the evacuees of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. But what about the adult movie charges?

Yes, but did they expect it to last forever?Probably, but it's only right to give adequate warning.

Do you have any thoughts as to whether the refugees voted in local elections where they were housed?

How much warning would be adequate? I would say 30 days. It had been publicized here for at least that long, but I guess if they ignore the news it might come as a suprise.

You said this has been run for a few weeks now? How long have the refugees by you known that a cut off was coming?Based on the news stories, at least a couple weeks. It started with sob stories about how FEMA wouldn't continue paying apartment rents until the evacuees died of old age. This past week, the focus was morbidly obese single mothers complaining they'd be homeless after FEMA quit paying for their hotel rooms. Looked like their efforts were spent eating rather than job hunting. I suspect that these poster children for the welfare state were living on the government dime in Section 8 housing in New Orleans. Of course, the reporters didn't delve into these issues...the point was to make FEMA and Bush appear heartless.

I heard they weren't going to pay for hotel rooms but had alternative housing they were trying to get them into. Trailers, apartments. If that is true, what is the problem?

Benefits are not infinite, they have to be cut off at some point. Early or late it will always be a shock to those who have learned to depend on them:
Works with unemployment insurance, works with lay offs, and will soon come as a shock to me that retirement does not carry medical insurance I've taken for granted but rarely used for 20 or 30 years.
Gotta happen sometime and the only reasonable response is to use the time you have/had to set up alternatives for yourself.

How much warning would be adequate? I would say 30 days.30-45 days would be fine: Thirty days for getting your rent and deposit money up. Throw in an extra two weeks for finding the right place.
But I got the impression that well into the first week of November they gave notice that funding would be cut by December 1.

Thanks. I will take this news about 'no notice' with a grain of salt then.

To: mlc9852
Well, the local news here is indicating they are on their own for alternative housing too. But from what I'm hearing on this thread, I am taking that with a grain of salt now too.

It is possible they could have been victims of the storm. No info was provided. That is just my assumption.

Until we stop paying the bill.....I've got no problem with that. None whatsoever.
But give them a little lead-time to get on.

It's about time. Most of these misfits have never had it better than when the federales took them under their wing and lodged them in hotels and fed them.
With their tellies going full blast all day and no bills to pay, these reprobates have never had it so good.
Look for a job?
Never!
Where are all the daddies?
