I've contemplated before what motivates Satan. He was the brightest among God's Heavenly Hosts who got too big for himself and rebelled. He was cast down. Why does he now care whether or not mankind?
My own thought is the thought expressed by this nurse. Perhaps Satan thought he could get himself a pardon on the coattails of man. If God loved this man-creation so much and He is a just God then whatever failings He overlooks in man, He can overlook in the fallen angels. Surely a just God couldn't condemn EVERYONE!
Of course we now know that God is infinitely just and infinitely merciful at the same time. He offered Himself in sacrifice for His family. Now all who truly want to be part of the Family of God can be.
Satan was thwarted again because he thought he could force God to play a weak hand... only to find out that God eternally holds all the aces.

I think the explanation is much simpler. Misery loves company. And don't forget pride. If he can't live with God, then no one else is going to, either.
